So are they really going to get funded and have some research groups?

Otherwise - Israel is a small enough country for everyone to know the degree from the `uni' is no better than Sami Shamoon college in B7. Doubt anyone would be fooled by a bit fancier diploma.

p.s. are you in .il?

I actually believe that the degree from AUC is better. But this is not the point. The point is that the degree from the "uni" is going to be a recognized by the State of Israel university degree (particularly, recognized abroad, not just in our small country). Now shouldn't it be up to the state (and not the local general) to decide whether or not the institution should be certified to grant such degrees?

As for funding, since AUC is now an israeli university, it is supposed to be financed by the ות"ת, just like all other universities (salaries, research, everything). The head of מל"ג יו"ש, who, as I've mentioned, was also the head of the appropriate ועדה whose purpose was to turn the "uni" into a uni, said on the radio "if the ות"ת refuses to pay, there are legal ways to make them". As I said, I find it very amusing, how these people dare appeal to Israeli law and legal system when it appears convenient.
