16: If you could change one moment in your past, what would it be?
One moment in my past? Just one? That’s the easiest decision I’ve ever had to make, which is a surprise considering the nature of my work. I don’t have to think twice about this one or consider the options and possibilities because I’ve gone around and around in my mind about them for years. I know all possible outcomes, save for that chance of some potential complication that might or might not be an issue. Given the notion itself I’m more apt to take the risk than let this continue.
I’d give Greg his leg back. I’d go back in time to the first moment he was brought in as a patient, take his case for my own, and treat his leg. There wouldn’t be an infarction now, there wouldn’t be a cane or pills or any pain. He’d be himself, his normal, near-misanthropic self, and I’d be happy with that because at least he’d be able to walk again.
It didn’t take me more than a second to know this is what I’d want.
