"oil and gas" isn't actually much of a direction, sir.
Are we talking out and out rigs? Because a)there's a couple hundred dollars of stupid courses and equipment you'll need first, and uh, it's breakup, so you won't actually get hired on until things start moving again (post-mud.) If not, there are a lot of areas *besides* 'the rigs'. But you won't get nearly as much of a workout.
Beware - whatever you decide to do, (especially swamping or construction) there'll probably be a bunch of hierarchical bullshit and a few old hands that decide they need to put you in your place. Just stand up for yourself and you'll be fine.
And if you want to keep your off-time in E-town, i'd suggest looking into Fort Mac (OOOH. lots of camps need cooks, too! ALSO... diamond mines up north are hiring for cooks, I believe..) ... they provide for you in camp, you work your ass off while you're there and then get to go home every once in a while and regain some sanity.
