Watch (seriously watch) 5 of 'em, have dabbled in one or two (L&O: SVU marathons, how they suck you in), and a couple are on my to do (at some point) list.
Recs -- Arrested Development (I can't NOT recommend this show), and Sports Night, which is to my past what House is in my present (and oh, such slashy goodness; Dan/Casey are so very House/Wilson).
Aren't they, though? It just occurred to me that I could probably get another friend of mine to watch House, by putting it that way--she loves Sports Night too.
Absolutely! Best friends, one being a factor in the other's troubled marriage (in some capacity), "vaguely gay," pantlessness -- the list goes on! There's a bit of an OT3 parallel, too, with Dana thrown into the mix. Good times! (I'm totally iconing SN at the moment, too.)
I only checked two shows - House and Mad Men. I have seen and enjoyed others, like Six Feet Under, but haven't had the focus to finish the series. I tried Battlestar Galactica, and enjoyed the character stuff very much, but found the spaceships and sci-fi-techie stuff to be overwhelming and off-putting. I'll eventually give it another try, I'm sure.
I haven't tried Doctor Who or Torchwood due to time constraints, but I'm sure I'll like them once I get to them.
Oh, one more rec that wouldn't fit in the box - How I Met Your Mother. Usually, I stay pretty far away from comedies, but I've found myself loving this one.
For whatever reason it takes me a LOT of effort to get into shows. (With the rare exception, like House). I definitely know what you mean about BSG being overwhelming...it's just very tense all the time. I really want to make an effort to watch it. So I'll get through the first season and decide if I want to keep going. I really didn't like Torchwood/Doctor Who when I started watching them, however, I stuck with them (and tried not to take them super-seriously) and then I *really* enjoyed them.

Psychological issues, missing brothers, overbearing/abusive fathers.....yes, it does go on! In all the best ways.

Oh, yay! I need to come over and shop, I've just got the two SN icons that I won't drop. (It's just so hard to drop any House ones to add more.)
