So first, I wish a Happy Canada Day to all the Canadians out there!

Buuuuuut, second...

Alright, despite the fact that it is Canada Day, and it is 142 years old (though not as it is now... cuz NF was NOT a part of the Dominion as it is), I have to post links to several sites and news bites regarding Beaumont Hamel, 1916 ( Read more... )

It's not a crazy reason actually. July 1st was the Battle of Beaumont Hamel....I thought you knew that?

Yes, I knew that. Now that I've re-read the post, perhaps what I wrote was a bit awkward. I meant that the gov't declaring July 1 as Canada Day seems a bit insensitive to me, considering in this province, that day is a memorial day. I realise that the British North America Act was signed on 1 July 1867, but the day wasn't really celebrated as it is now until the middle of the last century, after NL joined Confederation.

Anyway, I was just brought up to think of the first of July as a memorial day. Actually one of my earliest memories ever is my father shaking his head at the fireworks and calling the gov't a few very colourful words. :)
