I listen to mp3s, almost all of which are illegal downloads. Some are ripped from CDs I have bought, or purchased from Bandcamp or something. My boyfriend buys CDs, because that's all his car can play. Occasionally, I buy them as well. I want to buy a record player and some vinyl one day, though, probably once I get a house.

I actually rip music from CDs all the time to build up my laptop's MP3 library. I also have a couple wine boxes worth full of burnt CDs that I made from friends, family, and former lovers that I don't plan on getting rid of anytime soon. To be honest; I also will acquire a pirated version of an album every now and then. Give the music a test run. And if I REALLY enjoy listening to it, then I'll purchase the actual copy from the artist and discard the pirate.

I recently discovered Bandcamp a couple years ago- I've only bought one official album from the website- but I'm highly anticipating some more gems down the line!

I hear you about the record player and waiting until you get a house. Right now I'm going through a similar dilemma: Where I have a good solid vinyl collection, but just no vinyl player to have, use, and find a proper spot to play it with in our tiny apartment. So waiting for a house is a long term option. But my father and I might arrange something temporarily pleasing sometime down the road. ^_^
