Need help deciding on art
My home is very poorly decorated, mainly because I don't have much of an eye for decor, or a sense of how to do it, and almost never go shopping for it. Well, for a change I'm in a kind of shopping mood, for Rene Magritte!
I've always had a side-interest in Magritte's work, and thought it's high time I should get something new to put up on my walls. Problem is, many of his "classics" don't appeal to me, and the remainder... I dunno if they'd work as something nice to have hanging in a room. So I'm appealing to the advice of my LiveJournal friends! :)
As an added difficulty, most of these aren't available as posters. I'd have to find an art-book at the library, scan a page, and then try to blow up the picture and hope that it prints well, without looking too pixilated. Anyway, here's the short-list, and my pro-and-con feelings:
The Key to the Fields:
Evening Falls:
Both the above images have a similar theme; the first is definitely the brighter-looking of the two, but for hanging in a room, the broken glass shards have a certain violent, harsh mood to them.
The human condition:
This is the prettiest and brightest painting I'm presenting here, but the optical trick isn't especially novel, and given so many modern variants, is a bit boring.
Not to be reproduced:
I love absurdity, and this is a great example of it. At the same time, it's a rather moody, antisocial painting, and darkly-lit. Having a reproduced copy would also be ironic.
The Empire of Light:
There are several variants of this work. It's the only one in the short-list that has posters for sale.
Obviously a contrast between day in the sky and night at ground-level, but it comes off feeling like dusk, so it would add a kind of... low-energy, sleepy feeling to the room if I hung it on the wall. The one with the lamp reflected in water is the nicest-looking one, in my opinion.
So what do you think? :)
