Ode to My Astros

Oct 23, 2004 15:15

In a way, I'm glad the Astros are out of it so I can stop being so fucking stressed out all the time. However, in a billion other ways, I'm sad it's over. The Astros are now and forever will be my favorite sports team and it may seem foolish to some of you that I would let a game upset me so much. I don't think it's crazy and if you feel the ( Read more... )

if the astros beat the cardinals, i would have had no reason to think we couldnt beat anybody, it woulda been like the second rockets championship where no matter how good a team seemed to be, the houston team just wasnt going to lose...too bad that didnt happen

yeah it was a great year, a lot of fun, but it's still difficult to not be upset b/c as a die-hard fan, you always want the ultimate prize for them...and hell yeah, milo rocks, even though he is prone to hyperbole a bit too much sometimes...i mean, calling dan miceli "the missile"? thats just taking things a tad too far

tavares will not be in the starting lineup for opening day, i guarantee it...and why am i the only one who thinks we have a legitimate shot at re-signing beltran? no one thought we could get randy johnson or jeff kent, but we did it didnt we? hell, no one even thought we could get beltran this year, but it happened...even then, money only has so much influence up to a certain point, that ceiling is usually around 17 million, and after that, other factors gain greater significance (like the city itself, the fans, the makeup of the team, etc.), so yes, i think we will re-sign beltran...biggio will not be back and burke will be your leadoff man, thats what i would do anyway...not like it matters though, as long as we got stretch suba in the bullpen, we'll be a-ok...oh yeah and how are we getting billy koch?

we didn't resign randy johnson, and jeff kent was a non-trading deadline offseason signing. beltran wants a LONG ass contract, and houston got burned the last time they did that with some guy named richard hidalgo. provided beltran wasn't just giving houston the ol' lip service by saying he enjoyed houston (you'd enjoy anything if you were in kansas city your whole career), houston may have an average chance, but with our farm system being one of the best in mlb, i'd rather go with that. there's no guarantee beltran does what he does again, although his track record suggests that he will. i like tavarez for his speed, defense (which is important with our massive starting pitching), and miniscule minimum paycheck. i'd be more concerned with 3B, unless you start giving morgan ensberg a bunch of roids. summary: signing beltran would be nice, but i don't think it'll be economical for the future of the club.
gerd: i wouldn't be upholding my reputation as a self-made asshole if i greeted you. i've got people to piss off, y'know ( ... )

first off, no one expected johnson back b/c he hated it here so that's not really relevant and secondly, if the astros dont re-sign beltran, it will have absolutely nothing to do with the richard hidalgo fiasco...the two arent' even comparable, hidalgo had ONE good year and they wrongly thought he was the future...beltran has been doing it for a while, he's just been under the radar, he's a surefire perennial all-star, if we dont re-sign him it wont be b/c the astros didnt try, trust me on this, it's been like beltran fest 2005 around here for the past month or so...none of us know what will happen but ill be surprised if they rush tavares to the majors that quickly, the dude has a lot of potential but the last thing the astros wanna do is rush him to the majors and botch a potentially good career...and as far as the farm system goes, it aint as good as it used to be, why do you think we were so fucked when it came to plug in starting pitchers late in the season? our younger farm system (A and AA teams) is very stacked, but AAA is ( ... )
