Lord, I have driven that route a million times. It truly redefines boring. (Well, if you take it for hundreds of miles, like I always did when my parents decided it was time for a visit to LA.) Without looking at the pictures, I'd say that around that area there's a lot of chaparral. I've never heard that referred to as the Devil's Punchbowl, the road around there, at least, is called the Grapevine. (Like in this traffic report.)

One thing to keep in mind, when you're looking at your sources, is that people in Northern California refer to freeways by just numbers ("I took Five to LA"), but people in Southern California use the definite articles ("I took The Five to San Jose") and are more likely to use freeway names.

I agree with the previous response.

There's no easier way to tell where a person is from than by how they refer to the freeways.

I hadn't realized there was a split within the state for the terminology. Thanks!

LOL there's a sort of cultural contention between NorCal and SoCal in general, jsyk, mostly centered around people from the Bay and people from LA.

Yep, I'd call that sort of vegetation chaparral. You could also vaguely call an area like that "up in the mountains/hills," if you don't want to be too specific.
