Quick question-do men call them swimshorts in America? Or could I go with trunks?

I've only ever heard swim trunks and bathing suit. (The last one is generally used more for female attire, but I wouldn't blink if I heard it used for men's swim trunks.)

I don't know how much regional variation there is, but I grew up in the kind of southwest (wow, I don't even know what part of America Utah is considered to be) and I would call them either swim trunks or even just swimsuit. I would definitely know what you meant with swim trunks, and would not find it a jarring usage.

Utah is Mountain West.

I've certainly never heard the term "swimshorts" here -- if he's wearing something bigger than a skimpy Speedo, I'd use "trunks".

Swimming trunks, bathing suit or swimsuit. I don't think I've ever heard anyone call them swimshorts.
