I would like a pet, and my apartment building allows them, so I have considered the option. I really don't have the patience to walk a dog regularly, and I don't have a yard for one, so these considerations usually focus on pets of the feline variety. However, I am currently unable to pay for my own rent/bills/etc, and it would be very unfair to ( Read more... )

I think that you're just the right person to be a foster parent for cats. I've always wanted to do it, but it's not possible for me. My understanding of fostering is that you will have prospective parents over from time to time, but usually they are much more serious than the kinds of people who wander through the SPCA because they saw your cat specifically.

However, I think you will need to tell your landlord that you'll be fostering cats, and you'll probably have to pay the fee. Foster parents can have the cats for months at a time, depending on the cat. This would be the only issue, since you're currently unable to pay your bills.

Provided the deposit isn't astronomical, I don't think you have much to lose by giving it a go. Make sure you're not too attached to your furniture though, as realistically, a cat in new surroundings left alone might be prone to clawing at things. That being the case, you'll NEED to get a few of those cardboard scratching pads and place them everywhere. We have 2 or 3 at all times around the apartment. Make sure you have some of that enzyme smell/spot remover too, just for emergencies.

I have a a lot of friends who have fostered animals and I hear the biggest issue is really giving them away at the end of the period. So you need to be prepared for that.

Hope it works out!
