Tracks in the Snow

It's been almost a month since Meredith became a married woman, and though that fact changes a great deal, most things, really, just stay the same. At least, anyway, the practices of daily life do now that the honeymoon is technically over. One of those things is waking up with Sean in a comfortable bed - or, today, sleeping in with him, since ( Read more... )

Intent as he is on keeping his reflexes sharp, Sean's never going to be a heavy sleeper. When he's got a good thing going, though, he clings hard to it, and not being woken by sunrise on a morning he gets to sleep in with Meredith more than qualifies. He groans loudly at the sudden flood of light and instinctively throws his arms over his eyes, already realizing that something is very wrong, but not too worried about it just yet. It's been such smooth sailing since their wedding (and yes, he's still finding all the opportunities he can to call that blessed event to mind a month later) that he's been anticipating some new curve ball for weeks now, and anyway, they've proved over and over that they can more than handle whatever the place wants to throw at them.

"Ach, what is it this time?" he mutters, trying to hold off on opening his eyes to see for himself until they adjust to the light a bit. It's never a good sign when one wakes up wearing something that they're fairly certain they didn't fall asleep in.

"A city," Meredith answers. "And it's snowing." The latter, she expected, sort of, because that seems to happen every year. As bewildering as it is, she doesn't actually mind that change. She likes the cold weather and she has some fond memories of winters past on the island. This doesn't look like the island, though, not even with the way its buildings change every year. "I don't see any cars or anything. It's pretty quiet out there. But this is definitely not the island."

Beyond that, she has no real idea where they could be, though, and she's not dressed to head out and see for herself yet.

No matter how many times it's happened now, waking up somewhere other than the island, it's still the absolute last thing Sean expects, even knowing that mischief's afoot, and he's pushing himself hastily out of bed before he has a chance to properly assess a thing.

"'S damned cold," he mutters as he comes up behind her for a proper gander out the window to the changed landscape beyond, but it's hardly a complaint. "Where in the bloody..." he says under his breath before he shakes his head and forces himself to start taking this seriously. Wherever they are, they're there together which, while it's all that matters in the end, still isn't a reason to take the situation too lightly when just about anything could be going on. "S'pose we should set to pokin' 'round a bit, then. So much f'r gettin' ta sleep in."

"We can sleep in when we know what's going on," Meredith says. It isn't strictly true when there's every chance this could be something bad. They've seen more than a few changes in their time, and they've wound up in several different places, but this is something else. She can't begin to guess where they are, and by his reaction, she suspects he doesn't have any better idea than she does. "Come on, let's... get dressed and find out where we are, I guess."

Pressing a quick kiss to his cheek, she steps away to open the closet that seems to have taken the place of her dresser. As she tugs at the items of clothing within, she pulls a face. "Seriously?"
