The story takes place in Hamelin, which is an anglicised pronnunciation of Hameln, an actual village in Germany. However, this is not where the Pied Piper is from. He is a mysterious stranger who appears in Hamelin, but his origin is unknown. Pied Piper OF Hamelin, not Pied Piper FROM Hamelin. As to where he is from, since the stories never mention it, the interesting question becomes where does the legend come from? The oldest versions include the fact that he was a piper and that he lured the children away; the rats were added later. Theories include a plague or catastrophe that killed a great number of children, a serial killer preying on children, the children leaving as part of the Children's Crusade, or simply a metaphor for a number of citizens emmigrating. The Pied Piper used to be something of an interest of mine ; )
