Office of Dr. Rodney McKay - Monday Afternoon

Feb 06, 2006 20:57

Rodney's office was very dark except for one side that was brilliantly lit up with computer monitors.  Rodney appears engrossed in what he's working on.  Something that looks like a language, but no Earth language.

Pete knocked on the door, and stepped into Dr. McKay's office.
"Hello sir," He said somewhat meekly.

"Well, well, well, Mr. Parker. I was beginning to think you'd dropped off the face of the Earth."

Pete limped over to the chair across from McKay's desk and sat down.

"I kind of did sir. I was mugged pretty badly, and just recently recovered."

Pete's face still felt tight and swollen, and while his bruises didn't look as bad today, they were still very evident.

"Yes, and this little inconvenience managed to make you miss nearly two weeks worth of work?" Rodney asks drily. "I was beginning to think that Miss Tam was going to be an only student."

Pete blinked. Inconvienience?

"Well, considering that I was unconscious for most of that time, yes. Trust me, professor. Under the circumstances, I would have much rather been in class."

Pete frowned. "I have goals in my life, and I have three unidentified muggers who nearly killed me, to thank for slowing that down."

"Yes, and what are your goals, Mr. Parker?" Rodney asks roughly. The answer might well be key, he thinks, but doesn't say it aloud. If he were a frivilous student, the best he could hope for was a tongue-lashing. If he were more serious, however...

"I want to work in the theoritical sciences, obviously sir." Pete replied. "I always saw myself working in phyisics and chemistry, trying to make the world a better place."

He snorts. "Give it another ten years. Then you'll learn you can't do much about the world. Now, give me one good reason I shouldn't just bar you from my class."

"Dr. McKay," Pete said abruptly. "I can't help that I missed your class due to being beaten, and so badly injured that I nearly died!" His face was contorted, part with frustration, part with something else...anger? irritation? "So I guess next time I get attacked, I need to make sure it gets cleared with my class schedule ( ... )

"So, let me get this straight, Mr. Parker. Really. You nearly die and yet here you are miraculously healed. Oh, bruises you may have," he says, waving a hand to forestall an interruption, "but being beaten almost to death? Takes longer to heal. And as for responsibility, it is also the responsibility of the student to take an active roll in that learning process. Maybe you really were out sick, but I'm sure you could have managed to get a message to someone."
