The walls of the large ballroom were lined with tables covered in black tablecloths. On the tables were copious and quite possibly extraneous amounts of mini quiches, cheese, crackers, grapes, smoked salmon, deviled eggs, and various desserts in the form of glossy square cakes. Waiters carried around trays of similar items, although some were ornamented with shimmering towers of wine glasses that seemed to be specially endowed by some higher power to defy the laws of physics-how else would they manage to stay on such a frictionless tray without upsetting themselves and crashing into sparkling puddles on the polished wooden floor ( ... )
