[OOC] Character information
Here you can find quick information about the character of Egon Spengler for those who are not familiar with his canon or just want a little extra info to go on for RP purposes. Both canon info and the little tidbits I've fabricated for his character for the sake of this RPG can be found here. This is mostly character info. If you don't know anything about Egon's canon (SHAME on you, especially if you're a child of the 80's or earlier!), Google it.

Background: Ghostbusters wiki - Egon Spengler
Personality: A peculiar, reserved, and serious-minded scientist of physics and the paranormal, Egon is the brains of the operation. He often works in the background, giving his colleagues the floor for theatrics and presentation, while he runs tests and builds the machinery that keeps the Ghostbusters in business. His work for the Ghostbusters has been a rare venture into using his science for the greater good. Egon's primary motives are typically for his own knowledge and discovery, often performing tests with little consideration for their usefulness or how unpleasant it might be for his test subjects.
Egon can be eccentric but remains outwardly credible (for the most part), with his calm and rather blunt demeanor. He seems to have little concern for the actual danger or consequences involved even if he isn't sure what he's doing is completely safe. He once attempted to drill a hole through his head in the old (and widely debunked) practice of trepanation, and would have succeeded if he hadn't been stopped by a more grounded colleague. Egon is spectacularly brilliant, even considered a genius, and he has made some fantastic discoveries in science and in the human mind, although his experiments and test subjects are usually his playthings and nothing more.
Despite his immense intelligence, Egon can be unbelievably dense. He's extremely slow to catch onto social normalities and the emotions of others, even when directed at him, and it doesn't seem to bother him. He can be harshly blunt and is usually oblivious to the effect it has on people. Annoyance, romantic feelings, and even the humor of others are often lost on him. He can come off as rude or ignorant to those who don't know him well, but he really doesn't mean to be. It's simply that he doesn't care a lick about formalities and prefers to get right to the point.
In his thought and speech patterns, Egon is painfully literal and often misses jokes, puns, and sarcasm, despite his own sense of humor being rather dry and sarcastic. When he does make jokes, they tend to involve a moderate to advanced understanding of some area of science, and it amuses him to watch people attempt to figure them out. His colleague, Dr. Ray Stantz, is usually the only person who understands them and finds them funny, possibly one reason why they get along so well.
Having a knack for dangerous exploits, Egon easily gets himself into trouble and can sometimes lose sight of his courage when the situation really gets out of hand. Occasionally he requires the support of his friends to bring him back into reality, but when he knows what he has to do, he does it without hesitation. He performs his job with stoic determination and will throw away all selfish motives without second thought when the situation calls for it.
Although typically ignorant of the emotions and intentions of others, Egon can be quite proud when it comes to his intelligence and accomplishments and it doesn't take much prodding to get him eager to defend. He'll ignore the first few jabs, passing it off as simple teasing, but once he senses that things are serious, he won't hesitate to throw a strong word and even become physically violent if not stopped. His judgment on such things is a bit off due to his obliviousness to the socially acceptable. He's also quick to defend his friends and colleagues, though he'll often be the one holding them back, telling them to save their strength for a more productive approach.
Human feelings are difficult for him to grasp and express, but Egon can recognize them when necessary. An over-abundance of emotion directed at him, particularly that of sadness, despair, or romantic/sexual attraction can make him immensely uncomfortable and he usually doesn't know how to deal with it. He'll try to explain it away with logic or reason and, of course, that rarely helps. When around people he knows well, however, Egon can really open up and relax. He's known to smile and even laugh and let loose his peculiar brand of humor around friends. He'll gladly offer himself as an ear to listen or a shoulder to cry on so long as it isn't terribly out of control, and he can occasionally offer some stable advice.
As a scientist, Egon isn't afraid in the least to look outside the box and keep an open mind. He'll consider just about any explanation, even if it sounds utterly insane to others. This, however, is probably the reason why he's made so many brilliant discoveries, the likes of which have taken other scientists centuries to uncover. Sometimes it appears that Egon is taking a random stab in the dark, only reaching success due to pure dumb luck, but he will insist that there's a method to the madness.
Abilities: Egon has no magical abilities, but he is in possession of a few gadgets that do some pretty nifty things, such as his PKE meter and Gigameter (they detect paranormal energies), and his proton pack + ghost trap (used to catch ghosts).
