(Engie's just coming back from Sunday service when he sees a man walking down Mitchell Street with a machine that he's never seen before. Curious, he jogs to catch up with him.)
[Egon seems to be unconcerned with attracting attention from the drones. He continues scanning objects and even aims the device at the man who's just approached him. The device retains its slow, steady stream of whirs.]
This is a PKE meter. [He's distracted and seems to forget that he might have to explain what the heck a PKE meter is exactly.]
[The meter's activity speeds up suddenly which distracts Egon for a moment. He furrows his brows at it and then looks around to find that Eiki has already approached him. He points it directly at her and it gives its strongest reading yet. Definitely a Class 7.]
I'm checking for PKE surges. [Several seconds pass before he realizes that she probably has no idea what that means.] Psychokinetic energy. [As if that explains anything.]
Not exactly. It measures psychokinetic energy. [He takes out a notepad and quickly writes something down.] Am I correct in assuming that you're not human?
[It wouldn't go berserk around Alfred. .perhaps. He's not really supernatural, just a country. But the fact the thing is unusual and makes funny noises causes him to want to investigate right away.]
[When Egon is focused he's really focused. It takes him a moment to realize that he's being talked to and he finally turns around to face the young man, looking from side to side to see if there's anyone else around that might have been the object of his attention. He glances down at the meter's reading which is fairly normal.]
It's a device that detects high levels of electrons in a balanced environment.
[That PKE Meter might have been going nuts for a little while now, because there happens to be a rather powerful vampire following Egon. She hasn't said anything, or even asked what he's doing...she's just following and watching.]
[The reading has been getting gradually higher and higher and Egon's so thoroughly focused on it that he doesn't notice the presence behind him. He continues forward, convinced that whatever is giving off such a high reading is somewhere up ahead... but as he goes the reading plateaus and no matter how far he walks, it doesn't change. Well that's odd.
Finally he stops and glances around. There's no one in his immediate field of vision and that only confuses him further.
You might have to help him out on this one. He's so painfully oblivious.]
[The girl startles him somewhat and he looks up quickly.]
... I'm taking readings on psychokinetic energy in the area.
[He finally turns to face her and when he does the device goes haywire, the whirring becoming almost a high-pitched hum. Egon blinks down at the meter and quickly takes out his notepad to scribble down some notes.]
You seem to have set it off.
[He examines her quickly, brows furrowed. She's isn't transparent but that's not always an indicator.] ... You're not a ghost, are you?
[A guy with a funny-looking box strapped to him is one way to get Doof's attention on an early morning. He had been doing cleanup from the previous day's construction, but... well, when the man came down Stone Street, he was hard to ignore.
So the doctor strolled down his driveway, caught up with Egon, and came up alongside him, casually.]
[Egon barely registers that someone's approached him until he hears a voice. He gives this man a slightly surprised look, then clears his throat.]
A photon emitter used for detecting high levels of electrons, otherwise known as psychokinetic energy.
[As he continues to get approached Egon's gotten more and more blunt and cryptic about this device. Deep down he's hoping the technobabble will encourage people to leave him alone.]
[Makes a certain amount of sense, really. He's put stranger things in plastic boxes and walked down the street with them.]
I'm surprised you've managed to find the necessary parts for such a thing. And all of that plastic... what do you need to be detecting psychokinetic energy for, anyway? If you're hoping to find a way out of this place with that, I have my doubts. This town is full of weirdos who do weird things. They'll throw your readings off.
Actually, it's the weirdos who are providing me with the most interesting readings. The town itself is fairly normal, in an atomic sense anyway. What that means is that I'll be able to use the same calculations I was using back home to find a way to create a dimensional rip.
The beings that I've gathered readings from will help me to determine the electromagnetic transformation that occurs when entering this dimension which should give me a better idea of where we are exactly, on an inter-planar level.
[He holds up the case and opens the lid to demonstrate.] And the parts I used were taken from an old Radarange oven. All I needed was a photon wave emitter.

'Scuse me, but what have you got there, stranger?

[He eyes the man, suddenly wary of giving too much information to a drone, but the man is lacking that certain dead-eyed look so he proceeds.]
It's most commonly emitted by spectral apparitions and other inter-dimensional beings and vapors.

[She seems a little lost but tries to get a closer look at it.]
And it can measure how much one can move with their mind?

[Because everyone knows why that's significant.]
