Totally got me with the ending! I thought Toby would end up with Sean. I didn't see Sean leaving Oz/Tim either, but good... now he can move on and hopefully find someone that loves him like he deserves. This is an awesome story, thanks for sharing!
Nah, I couldn't saddle Sean with Toby's trainwreck of a life. Sean's going to get his university security job, and be boggled that someone pays him a salary for such easy work, and he's going to hook up with an emotionally stable, utterly geeky professor (with glasses), and they're going to live in domestic bliss.
Sean being able to move on from Oz was unexpected, but made sense. (And like his mom, I was glad he found a job where he was able to live openly.)
I liked that you brought it back to canon with Toby knowing about the Bonnie set-up. I'm not sure he'll be happy, but the Toby you've depicted here definitely knows how to survive.
Well done! Thanks for making this month a whole lot of fun.
(And if you feel like tackling Murphy/Giles domestic fic next, I won't complain.)
Sean leaving Oz wasn't my original plan, but in the end I just couldn't envision any kind of happy future there: even if Tim could turn gay, he'd be a crap boyfriend, and Sean could never be sure he was safe around Keller.
I know a lot of people hate that Chris killed himself at the end of the show, but in my mind that was the only path to a happy ending for Toby. Not for a while, obviously, but I think if Toby had been paroled and Chris had lived on inside, Toby would never have been truly free. But maybe, like this, he would have found a way to be happy enough.
I'm not going to write what happens next, but I think it's reasonable to believe that the professor Sean falls in love with at his new university might bear an uncanny resemblance to our Giles.
Thank you, cmk! I had the story, and pouted about the lack of Murphy to trill, and trill turned it into this glorious month.
And especially, just, thank you. You are one of the real backbones of this fandom, always around with something kind to say. I really appreciate how much you give.
When I finished reading Chapter 9, I had no idea how this story was going to end, but more interestingly, I realized that I had no idea how I *wanted* it to end. And I think I really like what you did. I definitely like that Sean quit his job (which I wasn't expecting at all), allowing him to start over somewhere nice and safe, hopefully with someone who is as good a person as Sean is. :-)
As far as Toby and Chris go, I think their ending is as good as I could've hoped for. I like that they are still "together," even though it's in a very loose sense. Maybe that love they share is strong enough to keep Toby's head above water and to make Chris believe that he's got something to live for. It's not a "happy" ending (at least, not until Chris escapes from Oz and Toby stows him away in the secret attic of his house), but it gives hope that their love is worth something, that it can be constructive as well as destructive.
And Tim... well, frankly, I don't care what happens to him. LOL

I like endings not to be clear-cut happy, because if everything is perfect, then it's all downhill from there. I like to end with stuff heading in a generally happier direction. And to my mind, sticking Sean with Toby would not be a good direction for Sean. If I send him off to be out and proud at a university campus, he might land some disgracefully young computer science student, or a Gilesy professor, or a sweet medical research PhD on exchange from somewhere exotic. So many lovely possibilities
