Untitled Ned/Harvey (This goes out to my girl Hailey)

Nov 28, 2011 21:37

Okay, so basically one night Hailey and I were talking about how awesome it would be if our icons (Ned from 'Pushing Daisies' and Harvey from 'Suits') got together and well, this happened.

The sweet smell of apple pie woke Harvey up from his heavy sleep and he peeled his face off the table, a piece of paper stuck to his cheek. Ned chuckled from the kitchen, "Finally up?" Harvey groaned in response and peeked open his eyes. The only light in the Pie Hole came from the kitchen and Harvey opened his eyes completely, looking for Ned. He stood up and pulled his papers together, "Coffee. Shower." His words were groggy. Ned gave out another little smile and poured Harvey coffee in his favorite mug. In the months that Ned had been with Harvey, he picked up his little quirks and habits. He knew every morning when Harvey had spent all night working he would fall asleep at the booth closest to the kitchen and the first things he would want were coffee in his favorite mug and a very hot shower. Harvey stared into the mug; the steam brushing against his jaw melted the sleep away. "What
time is it?" Harvey asked glancing up at the pie maker. Ned glanced up from his pie crust to the clock on the wall, "Almost 8." Harvey sighed, he'd already been late once this week and it was only Wednesday. Ned went back to making the special of the day and Harvey continued staring into the abyss of his coffee. They were like this most mornings during the week, especially when Harvey was working on an important case. Ned's focus was lost as Harvey sat in front of him, fiddling with papers and drinking his coffee in between sentences. "So what's the case about?" The pie maker asked sending the last pie into the oven. Harvey looked up, "Big corporate cover-up. Apparently the CEO has been spending the company's money without permission and his secretary has been covering it up. I need to save his ass so that I can get that promotion that Jessica has been hanging over my head." The one thing Ned would always embrace was Harvey's determination; even it was only for the money and the big office. He had ambitions to be the best. Ned poured him another cup of coffee as Olive walked in, "Good morning." Olive was a consistently dependable employee and neighbor; she was oblivious to Harvey and Ned's relationship which reassured the pie maker at certain times. Olive looked at Harvey, "God, you look horrible." Harvey looked up and met her eyes. "Thanks." His voice was friendly but with a thick tone of sarcasm that threw her off. Ned was already back in the kitchen trying to decide whether Emerson Cod would show up with another case to solve when Harvey came in the back, "Hey I'm going to shower and then go to work. I'll see you when I get home, yeah?" Ned nodded and gave a small smile. Harvey smiled back and kissed him gently before turning around and heading upstairs to the pie maker's quaint little apartment that had become Harvey's home away from home. Ned was still standing in the kitchen; he hadn't shifted since Harvey left. Olive's voice started ringing in his head, "Ned, Ned. Emerson's here." Ned was pulled back and he nodded before walking to sit with Emerson at his usual table. "Bout time, I've only been here for ten minutes with my pie and no pie maker. We got a case." Emerson was what Ned only referred to in his head as his sassy detective. Ned gave a half smile, "So what's the case?" Emerson's mouth was full of pie as he slid across a newspaper where written in bold letters was 'MURDER ON THE SEA: A TOURIST BECOMES FISH FOOD' Ned raised an eyebrow, "How am I supposed to do anything about this?" Olive walked over and gave Ned a cup of coffee, Bigby, Ned's reliable golden retriever, in tow. "So what's the buzz in the P.I. world Emerson?" Emerson looked at Olive, an annoyed expression started to rise on his face. "What's new is that my plate is empty and so is my coffee mug." Olive took in a sharp breath, "Excuse me." She picked up his plate and walked back to the kitchen, Bigby on her heels. "Anyway, this girl, her body is being brought back here to be buried soon. There's a 50,000 dollar reward for her killer. Ned whistled, "That seems like a lot for what looks like an accident." Emerson took a hearty laugh as Olive refilled their mugs. "You really know nothing about murder cases. Just do what we usually do and then there we are, quite a bit richer." Ned nodded and drank the last of his coffee, "I'll be back. Hold it down while I'm gone." He told Olive as he untied his apron, throwing it to the kitchen. Olive nodded dimly and watched as Emerson and the pie maker left. Harvey was dressed and on his way out when he ran into Ned as he and Emerson were leaving. "Oh. Sorry. You, uh, want a ride?" Ned asked an embarrassed smile spread across his face. Harvey chuckled and nodded walking around to the passenger side, Ned's eyes following him the whole way there. Emerson slapped the pie maker's shoulder, "Let's go and put your eyes back in your head before you get in." Ned shook his head and took a deep breath; he climbed into the driver's side and started the car. They reached Harvey's office in an awkwardly silent ten minutes. Harvey thanked him for the ride and promised to make dinner then kissed Ned on the cheek before jumping out of the car and running inside. Emerson had already sat in the passenger seat when Ned looked over, "Let's go." He said his tone full of impatience. The funeral home was another silent car trip that went on for twenty minutes. The home was more pleasant then Emerson thought, Ned remembered the place from his mother's own funeral. The two walked in and were met with a large man with a small end of a cigar in his mouth, "Emerson! Nice to see you again, room 13." He should have been less jolly at the entrance of his funeral home. Emerson slipped him an envelope and led Ned to the back. "One minute." He said, opening the door. Ned nodded and walked into the small room, the door shut behind him. The pie maker took a deep breath before opening the silver casket, inside was a familiar face. "Chuck." He whispered. Chuck was Ned's neighbor and his first kiss. It'd been years since he'd seen her but he knew he couldn't forget his best friend. He took one more breath before gently placing his index finger on her cheek. Her eyes flew open and she pulled Ned by his tie and slammed his head on the edge of the lid he'd just opened. "Chuck! Chuck! It's me! Ned!" He was gripping his head and
looking at the girl who somehow had jumped out of the box and was grabbing for a chair. "Ned?" She asked, her face layered in confusion. She smiled after she realized it was old friend, "Ned! What's going on?" She asked, her smile starting to disappear as she looked at the casket. The minute was nearing its end but Ned couldn't kill her again. He'd lost her once and he was going to let it happen again, especially not on his watch. "Okay, you're dead or were dead. I'm supposed to ask you who did it and then kill you again. It's a very complicated thing and it's hard to explain." Ten seconds. "I'm dead? That's a buzz kill. Well I guess if you're going to do you might as well do it fast. How about one last kiss?" She smiled as she leaned toward him. "No, no. I can't kill you. Just, uh, get back in the casket and I'll come get you as soon as I can. I promise." He smiled reassuringly and she gave him a wide grin of hope, "Okay!" She climbed back in the casket and closed her eyes, "See you soon." Ned nodded and closed the casket. He walked out of the door, the thought he hated reared its head into his mind, and ‘if she lives someone else has to die.' He shook his head and Emerson looked at him, "Well?" "She didn't know." Emerson let out a defeated sigh, "Alright let's go." The small song of victory rang in Ned's head as walked back to his car. They drove back to the Pie Hole and Ned dropped Emerson off, "Can't believe I forgot it. I have to go get my phone from the funeral home. I'll be back. Meet you in the morning okay?" Ned said, a thin layer of lies starting. Emerson nodded and Ned sped toward the graveyard, this time the trip was short and full of jitters. Before Ned got out of the car his phone vibrated in his pocket, Harvey was calling him. 'Oh no. I forgot about Harvey.' "Hello?" He said, trying to cover up the anticipation of getting Chuck out of the ground. "Hey I'll be done here in about half an hour, want to pick me up and we can go to dinner?" Ned hadn't checked the time or even noticed the sun was beginning to set. It was almost five and he was only worried about getting Chuck out. "Yeah that sounds good. I have to go and finish up this thing with Emerson. I'll call you when I'm done, alright?" Ned was trying to keep his voice even as he walked into the graveyard. "Of course, see you soon." Ned hung up and walked to the two men who were putting the dirt on Chuck's grave. "I think your truck's on the loose." They looked up and saw their truck rolling away. They sprung up and ran toward the getaway vehicle. Ned started shifting the dirt and pulled open the lid, Chuck had a smile spread across her face. “Hi.” She said. Ned heard the men’s voices, “Come on, let’s go.” Chuck climbed out as fast as she could. They speed walked to Ned’s car and climbed in, speeding away before anyone would notice. Ned sped back to the Pie Hole and Chuck sat smiling, “This is great. Thank you.” Ned nodded and gave her a small smile, “No problem.” Ned suddenly remembered Harvey again, he sighed before looking over at Chuck. He needed a quick hiding place for her before he could go eat, “Would you mind sort of hiding out at my apartment for a while?” “Of course not, that’s probably a good idea. What are you going to do?” She asked looking toward him. He pursed his lips, “I have to go meet someone. I promise it won’t be that long.” He pulled into the back of his apartment building and climbed out as fast as he could. “As long as you’re quiet no will notice you’re here and I’ll be home in a jiffy.” The two were practically running upstairs and Ned struggled to put his key in the lock before finally unlocking the door and letting Chuck in. He wrote down his phone number and put it by the phone, “Alright be safe and remember, don’t leave the house. If you need me my number’s right there, I have to run okay? Bye back soon.” He quickly shuffled to the door and locked it. He sighed deeply outside of his door before running back down the stairs. He caught his breath before calling Harvey, “Hey are you ready?” Ned was restarting the car and pulling out of the back lot. “Yep, are you on your way?” Ned heard the sounds of a normal office, phones ringing, copiers running, and the bubbles of a water cooler sinking. It was peaceful in a way he’d never understand, “You bet. I’ll call you when I get there; anywhere in particular you want to go?” Harvey took a deep breath, “Surprise me.” His voice was low and raspy which sent a chill down the pie maker’s back. He let out a giggle, “Alright, I have somewhere in mind.” He was trying to maintain the speed limit which was a lot easier than he usually thought; he sat on the phone listening to the office and Harvey’s gentle breathing before ending the trip shorter than usual, “I’m here.” Harvey hung up and shut off his computer before throwing last minute things in his bag. He walked down the stairs quietly before he heard Jessica’s voice in the hallway, he stopped to listen to her conversation, and “Harvey’s obviously the best candidate. I’m picking him and if you don’t like it, you can shove it. He works a lot harder than you and gets paid an eighth of what you do. This argument’s over, I have a meeting.” He stood still for a moment until he heard Jessica’s heels coming toward him and he decided to sprint off. Ned was sitting in the car outside, his mind beginning to wander aimlessly when Harvey got outside. He wasn’t sure if it was the appropriate time to celebrate since he hadn’t got the official promotion but he didn’t care. He jumped the stairs and climbed into the car. Ned was thrown back into reality when Harvey grabbed his face and kissed him hard on the lips. The pie maker was frozen with his mouth hung open as Harvey laughed, “I got it. I got the promotion.” Ned gave him a huge smile and started the car, “I’m really proud of you, you deserve it.” Harvey congratulated himself silently while Ned drove them to dinner. They pulled into the parking lot of a familiar restaurant and Harvey smiled at Ned. “Nice choice.” Ned got out of the car quickly and ran to Harvey’s side, opening the door for him, “After you.” Harvey chuckled and looked at Ned contently before climbing out of the car.  He stared closely at the relaxing décor and sighed with relief, Ned had picked out the restaurant from their first date. Ned shut the car door and laced his hand with Harvey’s, “Ready?” He nodded eagerly and the two glided to the door. The hostess knew Harvey by name and offered him his secluded booth towards the back of the restaurant. “Thank you Marie.” Harvey smiled as he sat down; she nodded and was gone in a flash.  The pie maker and the lawyer sat silently slyly glancing at each other with eager grins across their face. Ordering was a process they had like a habit, and they sat staring at each other silently. “I’m very proud of you.” Ned said reaching across and grabbing Harvey’s hand. Harvey glanced up, the low light shining in his eyes. Then a man walked up to the table, he cleared his throat and the moment died. Ned looked up, “Emerson?” Emerson looked at him with disapproving eyes, “We need to talk.” Harvey met Emerson’s gaze and nodded as Ned stood up to follow Emerson outside. “What’s up?” Ned asked. Emerson pushed his finger against the pie maker’s chest, “You! You let that dead girl live!” The color in the pie maker’s face faded and he tried to hide his guilty feeling in his voice, “What are you talking about?” Emerson’s eyes narrowed, “She’s at the pie hole. She’s been talking to me all about you and her when you two were kids. You need to put her back.” Ned looked down, subconsciously counting the nails on the deck. ‘Could I really just kill her again? I promised I’d make sure she would be okay. What can I tell Emerson? God, what about Harvey?’ “Ned snap out of it. We need to solve this issue now before it’s too far in.” Emerson wasn’t only thinking of the future or the money but he was thinking about what would happen if Ned’s power secret was exposed. “I’ll talk to her when I’m done. I can’t kill her Emerson, I promised her. I just need time to think about it, make her go back to my house and tell her I’ll be home soon. Please Emerson.” Ned said, shoving his hands into his pocket. “Fine.” Emerson said his voice stern. He walked away, leaving the pie maker to drown in his thoughts before drifting back into his seat. “Are you alright?” Harvey asked as Ned sat back down, the color finally reappearing in his face. Ned put on a simple smile and nodded, “Yep. I’m hungry though.” Harvey looked closely at Ned, his concentration written on his face. After a few moments of silence their food arrived and they thanked their waiter. They began eating silently until Harvey said in between a bite, “You’re a horrible liar you know? Good thing I’m the lawyer and you’re the pie maker.” Ned chuckled, nothing ever got past Harvey.
