He was about to log off the computer when the ping from the morning rang on his computer again, it was Castiel starting a chat with him. He swallowed hard as he looked at the little window, all he said was Hey Sam and that seemed to be enough to make Sam blush again.
Hey Castiel, uh I heard you had a stomach bug. Sorry. Sam was just as miserable trying to make
conversation online as he was off.
Eh, it’s not that bad. I got to get out of Satan’s class for a day. Sam realized his devilish implications
about their English teacher had rubbed off on him, making him smile like an idiot.
Yeah haha, anything but that I guess. This was making his palms get sweaty and he knew he didn’t want
to do this but his brain didn’t care.
So why did you stay home?
Oh well, I uh. Sort of stayed up too late last night and downed some Nyquil to sleep and decided I
didn’t want to deal with school today. I did my work though so, I didn’t really escape it.
You’re a weird guy Sam. Normally kids will just push that work off for a few days not do it at home.
I don’t know; rather get it done now I guess.
Well I’m glad you aren’t sick because if you were and I was stuck without you in that torturous class
I’d get bored. Sam read the message over and over in his head; he saw that Castiel wanted to be friends
with him despite the differences in their school friends.
Thanks Castiel. That was the best he could come up with after reading the other message again.
Of course Sam, and call me Cas. It’s what my family and friends call me. Sam read it out loud, “Cas,
Castiel, Cas.” He kept mumbling.
How many brothers and sisters do you have anyway?
Well, I have about six brothers that are all older than I am and two sisters who are also older than
me. I’m the runt of the litter. Sam’s eyes widened as he imagined having six Deans running around, the
thought making him want to tear his hair out already.
That’s…a lot.
Hahaha, yeah my parents are really loving though. My oldest brothers are Michael and Nick who
we call Luci just to bug him then there’s Gabriel who’s in the process of creating his own candy then
there’s Uriel and Raphael who are starting their own law firm and then Balthazar who’s in England
right now “studying”. My sisters are a lot different though, Anna who’s the closest to me in age is
writing what she calls the next big novel and Rachel is trying to be a model out in California. So it’s
basically me and my parents now, which is nice except when any of them visit. Sam wondered if Castiel
had told this stuff to Dean.
That’s a house full if I’ve seen one. It’s just me and Dean and our parents. They were thinking about
adopting a son since we’re getting older. Suddenly Sam felt close with Castiel because he’d never told
anyone else about that kind of stuff.
That’s really amazing, my mom wanted to adopt for a while even after having like nine kids.
It’s cute; your mom must have a lot of love.
Like you wouldn’t believe; well Sam I should probably go to bed so I can get better and not miss more
of school so I’ll talk to you tomorrow okay? Sam was shocked he wanted to talk again, still wondering if
maybe Dean was putting him up to it.
Yeah that sounds great. Night Cas.
Night Sam.
Then Sam finally logged off and turned off the computer screen, staring at the outline of his reflection. He crawled into his bed, taking his glasses off and setting them on the nightstand before rubbing his face. He wondered about what his mom had said earlier that day, maybe he did have a crush on Cas now that Dean was dating him. He repressed the thought enough to go to bed, sleeping well without having to take any medicine.
The next morning when Sam woke up, he felt a twinge of excitement for school; he guessed it was because of Cas but not wanting to admit it to himself as he got dressed in his Scooby -Doo shirt and jeans his brother popping his head in the door. “Hey Sammy, you’re coming to school right?” He asked, noticing he was dressed. “Never mind, answered my own question, see you at breakfast.” He cracked a smile and closed the door, going to his own room to get ready for school. Dean was already starting on his breakfast when Sam was downstairs, his mom smiling at him and nudging him, assuming she was referring to their talk from yesterday. Sam gave his mom a look and made some toast for himself, sitting next to his brother. They didn’t say anything until their dad drifted in the room half asleep and mumbling good morning to everyone, kissing in the general direction of his wife before pouring himself some coffee. Sam and Dean chuckled, watching their dad dragging himself around the kitchen to make himself some breakfast. Mary watched with her sons and shook her head, laughing. She helped him to the table, sitting him down and finishing the breakfast he’d already started. “You with us dad or has the living dead finally invaded our house?” Sam asked, his brother suppressing his loud cackling. John pulled himself from his coffee mug, looking at his sons and mocking his laugh. “You’re lucky you’re over there or I would hit you upside the head boy.” He grumbled, Sam smiling as his mom drifted in and sat next to her husband with his breakfast. “Alright boys, settle down. John, eat your breakfast.” Sam and Dean smiled at each other, finishing their breakfast before hugging their parents heading out for school. It started raining as they climbed into the car, both of them laughing again and shaking their heads. “Hope you brought your jacket Sammy.” He said as he started the impala, driving them to the school through the progressively harder rain. Sam watched the rain hitting the window as his brother hummed with the radio.
They got to school just in time, Castiel walking through the door of the school as they pulled up Sam feeling fidgety. Dean got out, starting to walk toward his boyfriend and putting on his happy face. Sam started to wonder, curious why his brother seemed like he was forcing it but ignoring it as he speed walked through the door under his hood. Everyone was scurrying off to class, leaving him alone in the hallway as he shook the water off. Sam sat through every single one of his classes waiting in anticipation for English so he could see Castiel and talk to him. Finally, the time came and he almost skipped there waiting for his friend to arrive. Cas drifted in slowly, something on his mind as he walked in sitting down next to his over exuberant friend. Sam suddenly felt everything sink and he buried himself in his notebook, doodling.
Class went by quickly, neither of them saying a word to each other until Sam got up to leave. “Sam, do you want to skip class and hang out?” Castiel asked him, wanting to get out of the pressure he was under. Sam looked at him, surprised at the sound of his voice again. “Uh, are you sure it’s okay? You don’t want to hang out with-“He was cut off by him. “I want to hang out with you.” He told him, voice a little sterner. Sam looked into his eyes and nodded, packing up his stuff. The two of them headed out through the library, avoiding the teachers and principals. Castiel stopped at his car, Sam staring at it in awe and smiling. Cas looked at him and shook his head, “Get in Winchester or we’re getting busted.” Sam nodded and climbed in, putting his bag behind him.
Castiel started the car and drove them anywhere, wanting to just relax. Sam felt the fidgety, fluttery feeling again as they drove away not paying attention to anything but the driver. Dean called his boyfriend, Castiel’s phone sitting in the cup holder vibrating. Sam and Cas were out at lunch, sitting on the hood eating burgers laughing about anything. They both felt relaxed, not stressed about school or friends, anything. Sam nudged him, “So, not to be abrasive but why did you want to hang out with me? I’m not exactly ideal skipping class material.” Castiel chuckled, taking a sip of his soda. “You’re being hard on yourself Sam; you’re great skipping school material.” He smiled, shrugging. “I wanted to get out of town and take someone with me, so I picked you.” Sam felt special, looking at his sandwich and smiling to himself. They sat on the hood for another hour, sipping on their sodas and telling each other dumb stories they made up in their heads. Dean called his brother when he realized he hadn’t seen him at school since before lunch, Sam feeling his phone vibrate in his pocket. He glanced at it and excused himself, “Be right back.” He smiled at Castiel, standing a little ways from the car and answering the phone. “Hey Dean, what’s up?” He asked trying not to sound guilty. His brother was agitated he hadn’t seen or heard from his boyfriend or his brother since this morning. “Where the hell are you?!” He asked, his frustration seeping in his voice. Sam cleared his throat, “I’m out, is something wrong?” He asked quietly. Dean put his forehead in his hand, “I haven’t seen or heard from you since this morning. Where are you? And where is Cas?” He asked, wondering if his brother knew something about him since they had a class together. Sam cleared his throat again, “I’m just out Dean, and I’m fine don’t worry.” He reassured him best he could. Dean wasn’t going to stop worrying, it wasn’t like his brother to skip school and lie to him like this. “Sam, where the hell are you and don’t tell me not to worry.” He said, getting more and more upset. Sam took a deep breath, looking back at Castiel who was sitting on the hood and looking out at the grey sky. He hung up the phone, not wanting to be screamed at by his brother. He knew it was a miserable idea but he was enjoying himself and he didn’t want it to go downhill. Sam walked back to the car and sat back down next to his friend, smiling softly. “You want to get ice cream?” He asked, ignoring his phone again. Castiel chuckled, “Alright, let’s go.” He smiled, starting to feel better that he’d gotten out.
The two teenagers were about a mile from school, eating their ice cream outside the little shop and smiling. Sam was telling him about something that happened when he was a kid, Castiel laughing and shaking his head. They hadn’t noticed that school ended and more kids from school were driving by. It was another twenty minutes or so before Dean drove by, slamming on the brakes as he saw them. He peeled into the ice cream shop, Sam looking over and back at his friend. Dean got out of the car and slammed the door, looking at his brother. Dean felt like picking up his brother and tossing him in the car but knew he couldn’t instead standing in front of the table. They had already finished their ice cream about to leave before Dean got there, Sam already knowing he was about to be yelled at. “Sam, get in the car.” He grumbled, holding back the yelling. Castiel looked at Sam who was almost cowering like a guilty child and about to head toward the impala before he stopped him, looking at Dean. “It’s alright Dean, I’ll take him home. It’s my fault he skipped school, I asked him to come with me so he doesn’t deserve to be punished for it.” He told him calmly and quietly, moving Sam back toward his car slowly. Dean stared at him and took a deep breath, “Can we talk before you go?” He asked Cas. He nodded, motioning for Sam to go wait by the car. The younger Winchester stood near Castiel’s car, kicking around a rock as they talked. A few minutes later Sam looked over as Cas walked to the car, Dean going to the impala. Sam climbed in once the car was unlocked, wondering what they talked about but not going to be nosy and ask. They were silent for a while, Castiel driving them to the park instead of Sam’s house, wanting to talk some more before he left him at home. “You alright Sam, you’ve been pretty quiet since we left.” He asked, looking at the Winchester staring out the window. Sam looked over and shrugged, “Yeah, a little embarrassed to be scolded by my brother in public but I’ll recover.” He smiled; knowing that he was more bothered not knowing what they talked about. They didn’t say much else after, Sam enjoying the scenery and the quiet sound of the engine; Castiel just enjoying Sam’s company and the little bit of the day they had left to hang out.
Castiel and Sam were sitting in a spot close to the lake in the park, the grass mostly dry from the morning storm. Sam sat quietly, waiting for his friend to start the conversation. “I’ve had a lot of fun today skipping school with you.” Cas smiled, looking at Sam. “Including you getting scolded by Dean, that was probably my favorite.” He chuckled, Sam laughing with him. “Thanks, I had fun too but the scolding part wasn’t as fun for me.” He nudged him with his elbow, Cas laughing and pushing him playfully. They sat there for a while, chatting about a few more things they didn’t get to finish over their ice cream before thunder rumbled in the distance. “Alright, I got to take you home Sam let’s get going.” He said quietly. Sam stood up and helped his friend up, walking with him to the car. The drive to Sam’s house took a little less time than he would have liked but he smiled, “Well, I’ll see you later Cas.” He grabbed his backpack, opening the door and getting out. Castiel rolled the window down once he closed the door, “Hey Sam, c’mere. I forgot to give you my number so I can hear all about how Dean scolds you now.” He smiled, Sam walking back and handing him his phone. Cas entered his number handing his phone back to him and waving as he drove away, Sam walking into his house quietly. His dad wasn’t home yet, his mom sitting on the couch while dinner was cooking. “Hey Sammy, did you have a good day?” She asked, looking away from the TV and smiling. Sam smiled at his mom and pushed his glasses up, “Yeah. I’ll be in my room till dinner alright? Just want to finish up the last of my math homework.” He waved before she could say anything, walking upstairs to his room and making it in before Dean could even walk out of his. He hung up his backpack and his jacket, changing into some drier clothes. He got his sweatpants and his raggedy shirt on, sitting at his desk to actually finish the homework he didn’t in class.
Dean walked in a few minutes later while Sam was tapping away at his calculator, not saying anything as he closed the door and sat on his bed. “Hi Dean.” He said quietly, not looking up from his paper. “Hey Sammy, how many things you got left on there? I wanna talk before dinner.” Sam looked down from his current problem, “Two including the one I’m working on.” He mumbled, typing in something and scribbling down numbers. Dean nodded, waiting for his brother to finish. Sam scribbled his last number, packing up his paper in his binder and putting it away. He turned around in his chair to look at his brother, “What do you wanna talk about Dean?” He asked, wiping off his glasses before putting them back on. “How you skipped school today, with my boyfriend of all people.” He said, voice monotone as he tried to read his little brother. Sam was used to his brother trying to read him, good at hiding most things from him. “He walked into English and it seemed like he had a lot on his mind and at the end of class he asked me if I wanted to skip class. I asked him if he wanted to skip with you but he interrupted me and told me he wanted to skip class with me so that’s what we did. He drove us out of town and we got lunch, talked then got ice cream that’s when you came. Then after we went to the park and he dropped me off at home, I didn’t really think you would mind. All we did was hang out, he needed a friend.” He said quietly, telling him all he would and never leaving his eyes so he knew he was telling the truth. Dean took a deep breath and nodded, “That’s what Cas told me. Just the part that confuses me the most is the fact that you would skip school. You don’t even like missing a day of school let alone leaving it when you’re not allowed. It’s not like you Sam, you’re a straight laced kid.” He told him, trying to figure out why he would drop everything at Castiel’s plead for him to come. Sam looked at him for a minute before shrugging, “Maybe I needed a break too.” He said quietly, their mom calling them down for dinner.
Sam and Dean ate quietly, their parents talking to each other in hushed tones their dad’s voice strained from work. “John you’re calling in sick tomorrow, you sound like you’ve been huffing paint for twenty years.” Mary told her husband, hand touching his forehead and going back to eating. “Yeah dad, stay or you know you’ll just be worse off from all the work.” Dean chimed in, his dad sniffling. “Alright, alright I’ll stay home tomorrow. You guys are really nosy.” He said hoarse, shaking his head. Sam chuckled, “It’s not like I would have let you go to work tomorrow anyway.” Mary and Dean smiled, looking at John who had a scowl on his face his nose starting to run. He got a tissue and blew his nose, Sam laughing and shaking his head. “Very scary Dad, don’t hurt me with your boogers.” The table laughing with him, the quiet tension that was hanging around disappearing as they finished dinner and Mary offered her sons some desserts she’d made earlier. Dean headed straight for the apple pie his mom was an expert at making, getting it with some ice cream and sitting on the couch. He smiled as he ate, Sam sitting next to him with a few cookies. They watched a rerun of I Love Lucy together, laughing and eating forgetting any animosity between them. Mary gave Dean another slice with a smaller scoop of ice cream and Sam more cookies with a glass of milk letting them spend time together. “Why don’t we all just stay home tomorrow? Have a little family day except your dad obviously because he’ll be in bed. We can do a movie marathon and eat junk food, all of it.” Mary asked, smiling as she sat in the chair. Dean looked at his brother and nodded, “I’m in.” Sam thought about it and knew it would be weird for him to go out when his mom offered a family day, smiling wide. “Isn’t tomorrow Saturday?” He chuckled, Mary getting pink from embarrassment and Dean letting out a laugh. “Yeah, guess so. Well it’s settled then. You two have no plans tomorrow and are going to hang out with your mom and have a family day while your dad sleeps all day.” She smiled, John waddling off to bed already.
Mary didn’t stay up much longer, following her husband to bed and kissing the top of both of her son’s heads. “Night boys, don’t stay up too late. Family day is starting at 10am.” She smiled, leaving the room and going to her bedroom. Sam and Dean finished their desserts, “Well I think we should watch a pre-Family day movie.” Dean announced, getting up and picking out a movie from their collection while Sam took their plates to the kitchen. When Sam was back in the living room the menu for Almost Famous was on, it was one of his and his brother’s favorite movies to watch together. Dean smiled; Sam turned off the lights and climbed onto the couch next to his brother. Dean hit play and they sat right next to each other, every moment having the same effect on them. They even sang along with the Tiny Dancer part quietly, looking at each other and chuckling. They didn’t say much, enjoying the brother time they seemed to be having less of.
Once the credits started Dean stretched, “Alright Sammy, gotta get some good sleep for Family day.” He chuckled, the brothers both getting up. Dean put the movie back and turned everything off, the two of them going upstairs together. “Night Dean, see you at breakfast.” Sam smiled, hugging him before going to his room. He got on his computer, his phone vibrating off his nightstand. He looked over and furrowed his brows, walking to his phone sitting on the floor. Castiel was calling him and he looked even more confused as he answered, “Cas?” He asked knowing he had to be quiet since everyone was sleeping. “Hey Sam.” He said, his voice sounded like he’d been crying. Sam sat in his chair, turning off his computer. “Cas, what’s wrong? You sound like you’ve been bawling your eyes out.” He said, locking the door. Castiel let out a pathetic chuckle, “Just been having a rough night, are you busy?” He asked, needing someone to talk to and knowing Dean wasn’t usually good at talking about feelings. Sam looked around his dark room and shook his head, “No, I was just about to play some mahjong as lame as that sounds.” He chuckled quietly, Cas giving him a small laugh. “I just needed to talk, family stuff.” He mumbled, Sam nodding. “What happened?” His voice full of concern for his friend and hoping he knew he wanted to know. “Remember how I was telling you about all my siblings and I told you about my twin brothers Nick and Michael?” He asked quietly, feeling tears fill up his eyes again. “Yeah, I remember you call Nick Luci to push his buttons.” He replied quietly. Cas nodded even though Sam couldn’t see, “They were going to come home for a visit but while they were at Michael’s house getting their stuff together someone broke in and…” Castiel’s voice cracked as tears rolled down his cheeks, trying to stay calm. “Well they got killed by whoever broke in.” He managed to say in a small voice, starting to sob silently again. Sam sat there, not knowing the words to say to make it better or help take the pain away. He sat there for a few minutes listening to him cry on the phone, wanting to hug him, to tell him that it was okay because he was there. He started thinking as he continued listening, getting shoes on. He slipped out of his room, walking downstairs and grabbing one of his heavier jackets before grabbing his brother’s keys. He snuck out of the back door, tip toeing to the driveway still hearing Castiel’s silent sobs on the phone. He got in the car as quietly as he could, starting it up and praying no one heard. “Cas I’m coming over okay? It’s gonna be okay.” He said quietly, remembering where he lived from when Dean dropped him off. “No Sam it’s okay, I don’t want you to get in trouble.” He said brokenly, Sam shaking his head again by instinct. “I don’t care about getting in trouble, you need someone there.” He pulled up to his house ten minutes later and parked, killing the engine. He saw Castiel sitting on the roof outside of what Sam assumed was his bedroom window, eyes red even from where Sam was standing. Castiel looked at the teenager standing there in his raggedy shirt and his sweatpants feeling something other than the depression he’d been filled with. He hung up his phone, tossing it in his room and climbing down onto the front porch Sam putting his phone in his pocket.
Once Cas was down he turned and looked at Sam, the teenager who statured over him before hugging him. Sam wrapped his big arms around him, letting him cry knowing there was nothing he could do to take it away. They stood there for a little while, Castiel running out of tears and finally just laying his head against Sam’s chest calming himself down. Once he had his breathing back to normal he unwrapped his arms from Sam, looking at him with beady red eyes the blue looking washed out against it. “Thank you Sam, I know it’s not really your job but I really, really appreciate it and I really needed it.” He said quietly, voice strained. Sam took a deep breath and nodded, “I just know you’re really close with your family and I could hear how sad you were on the phone. I couldn’t possibly leave you alone crying.” He spoke soothingly, putting a hand on his arm and giving him a reassuring smile. Castiel smiled back at him as if he’d said the right thing for once and looked into his eyes. They kept looking into each other’s eyes for a while, Sam feeling his glasses shift slightly on the bridge of his nose before Castiel leaned forward slightly. Sam could hear his heartbeat pick up in his ears as he leaned closer, leaning closer to him too before their lips were an inch from each other’s. Sam could feel his breath on his half chapped lips, “Cas, I don’t know-“ He was cut off by his lips, Castiel kissing him hand cupping his face. Sam held it and moved against his lips, not wanting to stop. They held their lips together for a long time before Castiel pulled back, laying his head back on his chest. “Sam, I’m going to break up with your brother.” He whispered arms back around him. Sam froze, he couldn’t let him break up with his brother because then Dean would think that somehow he’d had a say in it but before he could say anything else Castiel’s lips were against his again.
Sam finally had enough control to pull back, “Why do you want to break up with Dean? I thought you guys were fine, you seemed fine.” He whispered, trying to get the real reason why. He started to think about the messages his brother had on Facebook from those girls Ruby and Bela, wondering if he found out he was cheating on him. Castiel took a deep breath, “Today at the ice cream parlor when we talked he asked me why I didn’t tell him I was skipping school so he at least knew and I told him that it was an impulse decision that all I was really focused on was having a good time so I could forget about the stress. Then he kept just asking me questions about what we did and where we went, I told him because I didn’t have anything to hide even though I was mad I was being interrogated like a criminal. So I finally asked him about the rumors I’d heard he was fooling around with Ruby in the janitor’s closet after school while I was at football practice. He was mad but he fessed up and I walked away. I called him after I dropped you off; he admitted it’d been more than once and with more than just Ruby. I couldn’t do it Sam. I like your brother, a lot but this whole cheating thing isn’t something I can forgive him for. We’ve only been on like six dates and every time he’s flirting with anyone that’s around, waitresses, waiters, ticket sellers, concession stand workers, people in the bookstore. He always tells me it’s innocent but I saw him flirt with Ruby too and I see where that’s gotten me.” He said quietly, Sam hearing that his brother really did hurt Cas by his bad habits but he knew his brother and he knew he could change.
Sam had to try and do something to help his brother even though he really wanted to keep kissing Castiel, “I know it’s hard to see that my brother can be a good guy, he’s got bad habits that sometimes he doesn’t think will hurt anyone but I promise that he is good. He likes you, I know he does.” He really didn’t know if Dean liked Castiel, he told Sam he didn’t know the last time he’d asked and every time that he was with him at school Sam saw the fake smile he put on. He didn’t know what to say, he couldn’t lie to Cas and he couldn’t lie to Dean. He looked at the teenager still resting against his chest, looking up at the stars and taking a deep breath. “It’s your choice; it probably hurts to see someone you like a lot like someone else.” He whispered, speaking from his own experience but he didn’t say a word about it because it wasn’t about him or his feelings. Castiel thought about what he said, thinking about the things Sam said or the way he acted when he was around or how he suddenly dropped everything to come to his house to console him. He lifted his head up and looked at his face Sam still looking up at the stars. “Sam, Sam look at me please.” He said quietly, Sam closing his eyes and took another deep breath before looking into his eyes. “I never even noticed when we went to lunch, when we chatted on Facebook, dropping everything and skipping class with me, coming over here to make me feel better. Sam, you should have said something anything.” He said quietly, eyes never leaving his. Sam looked away and shrugged, “I couldn’t bring myself to it, Dean seemed like he liked you and I wasn’t going to come between that.” He whispered. Castiel cupped his face with both hands, kissing him again and slowly letting their lips peel away. “Sam, you big oaf you should have said something anyway so I knew. All this time you’ve watched us and sat on the sidelines because you didn’t want to hurt your brother’s feelings. You’re too good to be alone Sam Winchester.” He whispered, looking into his eyes and hugging him.
