Chapter 4

Eventually Sam let Cas borrow one of his old shirts and an old pair of jeans knowing they could at least sort of fit him since they were before he hit his growth spurt. The two of them were last to join the family waiting outside, John letting everyone go out to his SUV first and locking the door. Dean laid across the back row of seats, taking a nap like he always did on the hour long drive to Bobby’s salvage yard. Mary and John talked among themselves leaving Sam and Castiel staring at each other smiling. Sam held his small boyfriend against his chest and hummed to him, feeling him fall asleep less than twenty minutes into the trip. Mary glanced back at her sons and Castiel every once and a while, smiling at her husband.
Bobby Singer wasn’t blood related to them but they considered him closer than blood, John and him going to school together then college then they worked together till Bobby’s dad died leaving him his salvage yard. Dean and Sam always woke up when they made the turn, knowing the dirt road path meant Bobby’s wife’s famous pies and getting to wonder around the big yard. Castiel felt Sam wake up and buried his face deeper in his chest until he felt the dirt road. He slowly opened his eyes and took in all of what he saw so far, miles of stacked cars and equipment he’d only watched on TV once. He looked marveled at what he saw; admiring that it was dirty but organized.

They got to the house finally, Dean climbing over his brother and his boyfriend craving some of Mrs. Singer’s pie. Bobby was already standing on the doorstep in his usual clean plaid shirt with his hair combed, chuckling at Dean’s wobbly sprint to his house. They hugged and Bobby pat his back a few times, “Good to see you boy and before you ask, yes Karen made some apple pie. It’s inside.” He smiled, Dean’s face lighting up like he’d just won the lottery. John, Mary, Sam and Castiel all walked up to the door to meet Bobby. After John and Bobby said hi to each other, Mary cleared her throat wanting Bobby to see their company. He looked at the small teenager holding Sam’s hand, a half asleep smile on his face and he gave his best friendly smile under his beard holding out his hand. “Bobby Singer and who might you be?” He asked, Castiel shaking his hand the way his dad taught him to. “I’m Castiel Novak.” He smiled, wondering if he was supposed to elaborate. Bobby nodded, eyeing Sam before letting them all in.

Dean and Karen were sitting at the table, she was laughing at Dean scarfing down his pie. Mary shook her head, going over and hugging Karen before nudging her older son. “Thank you Mrs. S, as always the best pie in the world.” He managed through a mouthful. She nodded and got up, going to hug the other Winchesters before stopping at Castiel. “And who is this handsome young man here?” She smiled seeing he was still holding Sam’s hand and holding out her own. He shook it gently, introducing himself again. “Pleasure to meet you Castiel.” She smiled still, following everyone into the living room. Dean had eaten three pieces, stumbling in and flopping in a chair. “So how’s business John?” Bobby asked, looking at his friend and sipping on his coffee mug. John nodded, going into a story about some special part they had to order and Bobby nodded. After they finally finished exchanging business details, Karen looked over at Castiel and smiled the same friendly smile she greeted him with. “So Castiel, tell us about yourself.”

Cas took his time, telling her he was the quarterback of the football team at school and about his ninesiblings holding himself together as he mentioned his oldest brothers. The room listened closely even though the Winchesters knew most of what they heard, liking the way Castiel told stories. He mentioned how he’d met the Winchester boys individually leaving out any bad details about Dean not wanting him to feel like he was a bad person. Karen’s expression softened as he spoke about what led him upto the weekend he’d spent tucked up in the Winchester’s house, holding her husband’s hand as she imagined what he was going through. Eventually he told them about the morning, mentioning John’s interrogation and breakfast and the embarrassment both him and Sam went through. Bobby and Karen smiled, waiting till he was done before saying anything. “I’m sorry about your brothers Castiel; they must have been really close with you guys.” Karen said soft apologetic expression on her face. Cas smiled and nodded, “They were but, I’m glad I’ve got support. It makes things a little easier to go through.” He said quietly, squeezing Sam’s hand.

Eventually Sam and Cas snuck outside, everyone else playing cards. Sam walked him closer to the back where Karen kept a small garden on a small hill with a big, old tree next to all the plants. Dean and Sam had dragged the seats from an old car next to it, facing the sunshine. Castiel sat down and his boyfriend sat next to him, the sun bright against the towers of cars near them. “It’s beautiful.” The quarterback whispered, feeling the warmth on his skin and leaning against Sam. They didn’t say much, just sat there and enjoyed the feeling of having each other there. Sam looked over at Castiel, his blue eyes full of life and glowing in the light with just a flush of pink on his cheeks from the warmth. He caught onto the younger Winchester’s stare, smiling and turning to kiss him chastely. Sam blushed dark red making both of them chuckle quietly before their lips were together again.

It was close to prom, Castiel and Sam had been dating for almost nine months and the quarterback was excited about surprising his boyfriend for prom. He took him out to dinner on a Friday, Sam’s favorite Thai restaurant. “Mm, you know me too well.” Sam chuckled, hand reaching over and holding his boyfriends. Castiel stared at him, staring at the glasses he’d wanted him to keep wearing and the nice plaid button up shirt he had on. He was skimming through the menu trying to decide what he wanted to eat even though it was usually the same thing, the two of them quiet for a few minutes. The waitress came back, taking their orders before disappearing again. Sam smiled, looking at his boyfriend and noticing he was wearing his shirt under his button up chuckling. “So, you said you were gonna surprise me. My birthday’s not for another like month and a half.” He smiled, trying to figure out what he was going to surprise him with. Cas wagged his finger, leaning over and kissing him. “Nope, you gotta wait.” Sam pouted but still had a small smile on his face, their food coming soon after.

Castiel led Sam to the car when they were finished, holding the door for him before sliding across the hood to the driver’s side. “Surprise time yet?” He asked, looking at him and giving him his legendary puppy eyes. Cas shook his head, smiling. “Doesn’t work on me, besides we’re on our way to the surprise.” He said driving to the park they’d gone to the first time they ever skipped school and spent time together. He made him close his eyes, parking in the same spot and helping him out of the car. He’d purposely made sure he didn’t eat dessert, getting the basket and blanket out of his trunk. He set it under all the lights he’d set up earlier that day, sitting Sam down before leaning against him. “Open your eyes baby.” He whispered, looking at his face and seeing it light up.

Sam smiled wide; cupping his mouth and feeling himself blush. Castiel smiled, wrapping his arm around him and kissing his cheek. “It’s beautiful Cas.” He whispered, looking at him with the same big smile and leaning against him. Cas smiled, opening the basket and feeling his fingers brush against a little box. He chuckled, getting out the cheesecake he’d packed for Sam and the fork. Sam chuckled and let him feed him the first bite before eating slowly admiring all the different lights his boyfriend had gone through all the trouble of putting up for him. “This is a really beautiful surprise.” He whispered, Castiel chuckled again and shook his head. “I haven’t even done the surprise thing; this is just the surprise place.” Sam raised an eyebrow, cleaning off his fork before going to put the things back in the basket. Cas shook his head and stopped him from opening the basket, “I’ve got it, and close your eyes again.” He waited till Sam’s eyes were closed and he grabbed the tickets with the little box, putting the fork back in before sitting right in front of his boyfriend, stashing the box under his leg. “Alright open.” He smiled, Sam looking at the two prom tickets his boyfriend was holding. The younger Winchester smiled wide and nodded, Castiel laughing and kissing him. “I didn’t even ask yet.” Sam shrugged, “Doesn’t matter, you
don’t have to ask. You know I’ll always say yes.” They kissed again and Cas slid the ring out of the box, sliding it on his boyfriend’s finger before he felt him pull back. Sam covered his mouth staring at the ring he had on now, “Is this…?” He asked breathlessly, feeling tears in his eyes. Castiel chuckled, nodding slowly and looking at him.

The next thing he knew he was wrapped up in Sam’s arms, Cas smiling and looking up at him. “Well now it’s just a commitment. Later it’ll be better and prettier.” He smiled, Sam laughing and nodding. “I like that, a commitment.” He said with the dopey smile stuck on his face. They sat there for a while, Castiel wrapped up in his boyfriend’s big arms and holding onto his hand with his thumb grazing the ring every once and a while. Finally Sam yawned and made his boyfriend yawn, “You wanna go to my house?” Cas asked, Sam nodding and yawning again. “Alright come on sleepy head.” He chuckled, helping him up and getting the blanket with the basket. He turned off the lights with a switch and walked hand in hand back to the car. He opened the door for him and closed it when he was in, putting the stuff in the trunk.
He drove them to his house, seeing Sam already dozed off in his seat and smiling. When he got to his house, he picked up Sam with not a hint of difficulty and carried him inside. He waved to his parents and they nodded with smiles on their face, “What’d he say?” His mom, Becky whispered. Her son showed them his boyfriend’s hand and his dad, Chuck lightly pat his shoulder. “Good job.” Castiel nodded and smiled, going up to his room. “M’your parents are so cute.” Sam mumbled, eyes still closed as they went upstairs. “You’re horrible.” His boyfriend responded, chuckling.

“C’mon Sammy, our dates are waiting.” Dean said, stepping into his little brother’s room. “Aw look at you, all grown up and completely incapable of tying a bow tie.” He chuckled, walking over and tying his bow tie for him. “Are you nervous?” He asked as he tied the last of it, looking up at his brother. Sam smiled, tucking his hair behind his ears and shaking his head. “Nope, not yet at least.” He chuckled, the brothers walking over to the stairs. Dean walked down first, Ruby waiting at the table with Castiel and smiling as he did his model face for his mom who was taking pictures. She took a few of Ruby and Dean before Sam peeked down and saw Cas waiting for him. Sam took a deep breath, hand making sure his hair was okay and pushing his glasses up again. He looked at the ring he was wearing, nodding and walking downstairs slowly, his mom taking pictures already. He didn’t model for her like his brother, he didn’t tear his eyes away from Castiel’s as he walked down. He finally got to the bottom and they hugged longingly, kissing softly pulling back as they felt the flash on them. They chuckled and Sam pinned his moose pin to his boyfriend’s lapel, Cas smiling. “Got you one too, my mom thought this one, was better.” He said pinning the little angel to his lapel. They got through pictures and Mary and John’s
warnings, climbing into their two different cars. “Was it awkward being next to Ruby?” Sam asked, looking at his boyfriend in the passenger seat. Castiel chuckled and shook his head, “Not really.   I was just sitting and waiting for you.” He smiled, holding his boyfriend’s hand and looking into his eyes. They didn’t hear the honking until it was too late, the next thing was a whole blur as a car crashed into them and flipped them three times.

Sam coughed, head spinning as he looked around and saw Castiel still next to him breathing heavily. “Hey, we’re okay.” He whispered, hand still in his. Cas woke up slowly, looking at him and smiling weakly. “I love you.” He whispered, the sirens echoing as they raced to them. “I love you more.” Sam said, closing his eyes and listening to the sirens as he held onto his boyfriend’s hand with all his strength.
