That's always been such a wonderful tale :). Have you ever considered creating a piece of music from what you remember of the song? To bring it to life in a second way?
Reminds me of one of the recurring themes in a play I saw a few times recently (August Wilson's "Joe Turner's Come and Gone," which I think you'd actually enjoy a great deal), where this one character, who is an aged mystagogue of sorts, keeps going on about "finding one's own song" and being somewhat lost in the world without one. It's lovely that this will always be a part of you.

Ever get around to watching "The New World"? :)
