I love being able to make stupid decisions. Isn’t that what being grown up is about? I decided after Kunicon Miami, that I would do a con a month this year. *smiles* It’s been fun.
Kunicon Atlanta:
I think I am getting pretty used to travel at this point. I had about a 4 week break since I went up to Vancouver, and a six week break after Sakura Con so I was ready for another trip. I drove up to Portland Wednesday evening. Like usual, I had stayed up the night before getting ready, so driving on so little sleep was hard. Caffeine is my friend, so I was wide awake for the trip. So awake in fact, I couldn’t sleep once I got to my mom’s. So I stayed awake, entertaining myself by painting my nails. (I never do this, but boredom does silly things) Also, I was hoping to get less of the ‘hippie’ remarks. I figured painted toenails might help… yeah… I have no idea.
I was at the airport by 6, and left an hour later on Delta. I discovered I don’t like Delta too much. I flew into Cincinnati, then into Atlanta. Oh Man! Atlanta is huge, -well the airport. I was fortunate enough to fly in about the same time as other guests, so I got to bum a ride back to the hotel with them. Its also so happy meeting up with friends you only get to see at cons. Its like a summer camp! And with this group, there is never a shortage of Dave Caradine jokes and impersonations.
Once back at the hotel, I headed to the pool with the lovely Ele, and meet up with Toshi there. Later more guests came and we all decided that we needed dinner and spirits. The only place open to eat was really lousy. I ordered a margarita that tasted horrible, and the next drink I got didn’t taste much better. Finally, I got a warm Guinness and decided I should be happy with that.
I was not impressed with downtown Atlanta. It just seemed run down and dirty. I am not sure what I was expecting. Whatever it was, it wasn’t the concert buildings and ugly statues. What Atlanta was lacking as a city, the hotel made up with it’s ‘heavenly’ beds. Sooooo nice and comfy!
The next day, I waiting in anticipation for the con to start, but it never really did. Since Bob and Emily DeJesus canceled, I was offered their spot next to Doug in the dealer’s room. Given the location of the regular artists alley, I was grateful. While Doug was involved in panels and such, I watched the tables. I was happy to be of help, since I never really paid for a dealer’s room spot. Some Miami artist friends also in the dealers room too. That was fun.
Sadly, the people never came, and the dealer’s room remained pretty empty. I was going stir crazy and wondering how I was going to justify my con expenses if I didn’t sell anything. I was feeling pretty stupid.
But for what the con lacked in attendees, it made up for it in guests and stuff. A very fun group of people. The greenroom was wonderfully stocked. I didn’t get a chance to see many panels over the weekend, but the ones I saw were very fun. The uncensored panel was wonderful. Ele, my fellow lollypop girl, and myself enjoyed lollypops on the floor as we watched the panel. Lots of funny stories. I think every con should have one of these. They had a version of Hollywood squares that was very funny too. The dance was awesome! Greg Ayres is an awesome DJ. To bad he is committed to another con, or I would really want him for mine. Though, Richard Epcar wants to come to Portland. *grins*
Oh, and in a discussion with Manny, I learned that they were considering holding a con in Portland, -because there wasn’t one!!!!! *glares* I was pretty offended, since our attendance last year was probably twice that of Kunicon Atlanta. I think I was pretty polite in telling him that ‘no’ ‘they should not really try one there’
Kunicon is a strange organization. I think their strength is being able to have cons in towns that don’t have them. Ei. St Louis and Miami. I think it backfired on them in Atlanta since there was already a con. I wish them the best of luck, they are a great group of people, but please, don’t overextend and please please don’t try to compete with my con. (see… I was pretty offended)
The last night, I got to go to Marlin’s house for a BBQ. Mark, a guy from Cartoon Network gave me a ride over. I got to ask a whole bunch of questions. *smiles* And I learned many interesting things. The BBQ was wonderful and ironically a lot of people from the Hawaii con were there. The people that run Kawaii con are mostly based out of Atlanta. After talking with them awhile, I SOOOO want to go. I am almost 80% sure I will. (apparently, only about 4 artists came last year) And… and…. Its Hawaii!!!
I stayed up all night to catch my flight out. I left Atlanta with really mixed feelings. I enjoyed myself, very much so, but I didn’t make enough to pay for my trip. And we really don’t have the money. Ryan won’t let me do another kunicon on faith. But I will be there for Miami and St Louis!
3 days after I got home, I left for Dallas…
