and then I said...

How's everybody's Easter sunday going? It was a lovely day here in So Cal. Since my family gathered to celebrate it yesterday, I had the entire day to myself and the project for the day was framing up permanent shelves in the garage. It took most of the day with frequent treks outside with the cats and one to Lowes (without cats) and I'm feeling a ( Read more... )

I too ate chocolate all day! Hey it's Easter! Calories from Chocolate on Easter, Christmas, Halloween and Valentine's day don't count....right?!
Envious of your carpentry skills! I couldn't put up shelves to save my life!

Right! As long as you make it to the gym soon after wards!

I really enjoy customizing my house with built-in shelves and such. I was planning out the shelves to go on the opposite wall but there's a 40" tall brick wall that I have to work around. I can either start the shelves above the wall or learn how to anchor shelves in mortar. Sounds like fun!

I have eaten so much chocolate this weekend it's not even funny -- and I haven't broken my English egg yet, lol. I'm going to have to really hit the workouts hard the next three weeks, or I'll look bad in all the new shorts I just bought for Disney World!

Glad you had a happy Easter! Good luck with coloring the R/T art, I'm just dying to see it!

Don't have any recs at the moment, but was "Son of a Witch" good? I loved "Wicked." (Though I hated the musical...)

We can both blame Karen if we can't fit into our shorts this summer!

Me too!

For the most part, I did like "Son of a Witch" but Liir wasn't as compelling a character (to me) as Elphaba and I found it difficult to sympathize with him. He had a number of "quests" to complete and I think he only got one done so there were a lot of unanswered questions by the end. I don't know where "A Lion Among Men" falls in the series and whether it will get around to those answers or we'll just never know.

Have you read the original Oz books? I'm thinking I should try some of them.

I haven't read them in many, many years, but I remember as a kid not really caring much for them. Now of course, I might like them better now...

The shelves look great! (As does the chocolate, hee.) I'm glad you had a nice day.

It was really lovely where I am -- sunny and a little cool, with crisp clear air.

I'm looking forward to your R/T piece, of course, but as someone else who's always slow finishing things, I'm glad to have a compatriot. ;)

As for book recs, hmm. Before HP I wasn't much into fantasy, so I don't have a lot of great references in that genre, but one series I did read a while back and have been thinking about again recently is Ursula K. LeGuin's Wizard of Earthsea series, especially the new installments she wrote in the 1990s. Have you read any of those?

It would probably be a good idea that we never try to collaborate on anything then. ;)

Nope. I've written them down and will check 'em out. Thanks for the rec!

I can't help feeling that if you were that bit nearer, you could make the bookcase we've been waiting for since 1066. Yes, I exaggerate, but only slightly: Ikea are just never going to be my best friend at this rate. (Though we do feel home delivery avoids the chances of Mr. Gilpin getting attached to a non-moving escalator again.)

Have had a large piece tonight of Mr. Gilpin's Easter egg, so I share your chocolate pleasure. And am ignoring the fact that, after a day spent shifting half the garden into rubbish sacks, Wii Fit kindly told me my age was 48.

As for books, I'm greatly enjoying Megan Whalen Turner's trilogy, which starts with The Thief, and is followed by The Queen of Attolia and The King of Attolia. I actually discovered her by reading that she's one of Lois McMaster Bujold's favourite authors. They're written for young adults, set in an imaginary Byzantine-like setting, reminiscent of Ancient Greece. The first book introduces you to the main hero, who is very much a young boy, and the only thing I would say is ( ... )

I'd be happy to work for room and board...and some guided sightseeing.

D'oh! If Wii had been aware of all the work your spry young self had done earlier, it would most certainly have adjusted your age down a decade or two. What does Wii know, anyhow! ;)

Plus the hero is as cunning, maddening and likeable as you can get.Sounds good. I'll check it out. You know, I still have Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" sitting on my shelf waiting to be read but I haven't really felt like cracking ( ... )
