So, my 89-year-old grandmother fell last week and broke her femur. We've been worried about the stairs, but it was a little piece of paper in the middle of the dining room that finally got her--she bent to pick it up and down she went. She pulled through the surgery but is still hallucinating from all the pain meds.* It's been five days and that ( Read more... )

Do it. And if you can, talk to a lawyer (always easier said than done).

mda's great-aunt Margaret fell and is in the hospital. She's 96 and hates it. They're trying to figure out if she had a stroke.

It sucks, but I hope your gram is on the mend. Sorry about the headaches.

lawyer=you're right. Why do I cringe when I think of talking to a lawyer?

"Why do I cringe when I think of talking to a lawyer?"

There's the money factor, and, who the hell do you talk to? I'm thinking you should call Jerry Opgenorth, which mda agreed with. He [mda] said that he thinks Jerry, if he couldn't help you, could direct you to someone who could. And mda also thinks you should call the cops if anything untoward happens so you can get an incident report.

Maybe her doctor could also be helpful, giving you some pointers about your situation.

These things are so individual and everyone is under stress when they deal with them.

I hope good things for your grandma. She's in a lot of pain so hopefully the meds are the only things making her hallucinate. It's not necessarily anything permanent: mda's dad had major hallucinations before he died because of all the meds he was on. He was convinced at one point that there were two tiny men standing in the living room and he couldn't get rid of them (mda's sister and mom told his dad just to tell the guys to go away, which John did).

Grandma has a lawyer who specializes in senior citizen law, so I should probably talk to him. But, yes, the money is a big issue ( ... )

I've been watching my grandma go in and out of nursing homes for a little over a year now and it is a challenge and a half with insurance and dealing with doctors and whatnot. And she has four daughters in town to share the lead of visiting, dealing with insurance, etc.

Handling all of it on your own has got to be super tough, plus seeing her in that state is wrenching. I remember visiting my grandma in the hospital when she broke her hip and everyone thought she wasn't going to make it. She was fairly out of it and I thought it was my last visit with her and trying to tell her I love her and she was blowing it off and talking about seeing us at Thanksgiving and it was heartbreaking. Fortunately, she was right. She pulled through and did see us at Thanksgiving and is still kicking along.

I hope your grandma proves to be a tough old bird as well and makes a speedy recovery.

Yeah, it's all the senior issues that I'm clueless about, particularly Medicare.

Thanks for the good wishes. She is very stubborn so hopefully that will kick in soon.
