Fanfic Etiquette Question

Okay, I've been going through the archives of one of the communities that I follow and catching up on stories that were posted previously. I found one that had an interesting premise but the execution was not the best. The writing wasn't the greatest in my opinion but what really bothered me was the beta job was awful ( Read more... )

So, I know you asked me about this earlier. And I don't have the greatest response here. So, I'd say after six months I would maybe not post anything.

Otherwise, I'd stick to the basic rules for ConCrit. Concrit is the best way to comment in these situations, IMHO. heh heh heh. Humble.

So, if you feel the need to post, I would do the "things I found distracting/off-putting, then the things you actually liked. try to keep the lists of similar length to not discourage budding authors, 'cause we could use more, not less, and everyone can be taught to be a decent, if not absolutely stellar, writer.

See, I can't really think of anything I actually liked. I don't know if that's because the grammer was so bad I couldn't get into it or if there was just nothing there that I liked. I'm thinking of finding one of their newer fics and seeing if the same problems are still there and commenting on that. Or would that be really bitchy of me?

Also, you being humble demands the bullshit flag. A big gi-normous honking bullshit flag. Just saying.

To be honest, at this point leave it. It's too late to be of any value.

That's kind of the conclusion I had come to. It sucks because at this point the only comments the author has gotten are positive "OMG that waz so kewl" type ones and those will not do her any good. But at this point, anything else is probably too little too late. *sigh*

If that is her target audience she won't appreciate/understand concrit!

That's a good point too. And I don't know about you, but it really bugs me when people are asking for concrit and freak out when you get to the crit part of concrit. So yeah, I'm probably going to let this one go.

I agree with you about finding mistakes x amount of time later. Cause, yes, I don't like making mistakes but they do happen as I am human. And it is kind of flattering or something that someone liked what you wrote well enough to comment on it even months after the fact.
I don't really know this author so I don't know if she could take it as a reflection of the work or if she would take it personally and I don't want to start a little pissed off fest so I'm going to let it go.
