So welcome to another day in the life of Jason. Yeah…. twas an interesting day. Some stuff with school…. with crazy classmates… with awesome Mom’s away from home….. with awesome senile nuns that love me…. and my last class of the week… it was a speshul.
So… I’ll start with last night. Went to get dinner with Adam…… just over to the diner in one of the apartment buildings. We got it to go and came back. Watched some Daily Show and Colbert….. ripping into the DNC… it was quite amusing. Got to talk some politics with him….. yeah…. he’s so very cute when he talks. And it didn’t hurt when he was only wearing gym shorts. God he’s so sexy. I think the two of us hanging out is going to be the nightly routine during the week. My roommate Marc kinda stays on his computer and talks on AIM and facebook and does schoolwork. Chris… I never see. He’s always out or in his room with the door shut. Me and Adam are the ones that like to be social. Plus I think we just get along well. Plus I never pass up the opportunity to drop things I’d rather do for hanging out with someone I enjoy or am attracted to. But yeah…. he makes my nights nice and fun when I get home at like 9 PM.
So today was another day in the office. A shorter day… pulled a 12-4 before class. I got to do some copying for my boss, the e-mail list for my Tuesday class, and answer the phone and completely fail at transferring the call because apparently no one knows how to transfer calls on our phone system. I also learned that my main jobs in the upcoming weeks will be maintaining the website and taking over this massive database that tracks all alums. Fun. I should enjoy it…… unless some professor takes a special interest in me and claims me all for his or her own.
So…. at one point in came crazy senile nun. She was very nice… she’s like 65 or so… stick thin and walks with a little suitcase-like briefcase. Anyway….. she first went to Richard who she knows since he’s a returning GA. But then Richard was busy with what he was doing and I offered to help her… logged her onto PROWL (LMU’s checkmarq) so she could view what class she was registered for and make sure she had the right classroom. She also went on about how at the beginning of this semester all of her contacts and saved e-mails on her school e-mail had been deleted and how she had called IT Services and they had laughed at her and told her to talk to another department. So she was in the process of re-finding all of the office numbers and e-mails and phone numbers of everyone in the theo department that she needed. I offered to help her set up a personal e-mail so she could have everything forwarded to that so she’d have more control over the contacts and saved e-mails. She seemed very appreciative and might come by for that. Richard was telling me that there are lots of the old nuns and priests that come by and ask us to look everything up for them. Some of them are the Africans who get really demanding and don’t ask but just expect it done… and that we don’t have to do it especially if we’re busy with something else…. but Richard says he always does it anyway… and I imagine I’ll be the same way… I have a weakness for little old nuns….. like my second grandmother Blessed Joan of Mashpee.
So yeah… other thing… since like 2/3 of the GA’s speak Spanish….. being from southern LA and 1 from Mexico….. they are determined to teach me Spanish. Yeah… it’s amusing. I mean… I was considering auditing a course to learn Spanish since it’s good with Liberation theology…. but watch just working here and living here is going to be more effective than taking a class. Though in truth… with how my mind works… and that I’d be reading and translating….. a class would probably help… but being forced to listen to it and talk in it would be a great supplement. I’m their pet project….. because I totally don’t stand out as the whitest white boy to ever be white at things.
So… I get to my class today… Intro to New Testament… and like right away one of my fellow new grad students is all… oh have you found a place to shop yet. I have some info on this place that delievers if you need it. Do you need help with anything. She’s so sweet. Her name’s Elsie…. mother of a young child... I think 4 y/o. But it was so nice… she’s wicked friendly. I don’t know why but I tend to make women want to be all motherly to me. I don’t know what I do to arouse that in women…. but I seem to. It’s weird.
Also… there’s this one older man in this class from MA. He lived in Lexington… moved out to CA as a kid and hates it here and wants to go back to MA…. but his wife and then his job have always kept him out here. He grabbed me during the break and talked to me for the whole 10 minutes about what he loves about New England and everything and how much he hates it here in southern California and how all of his kids but 1 have moved away because it’s so miserable here. He’s a very sweet old man… and I enjoyed talking to him… but once again… I attract all of the older people that want to like be best friends with me. It’s just funny. I’m such an old soul with the heart of a 15 year old girl.
So finally… about the class…. oh God work. First we have 6 books…. and 3 of them are 800 page monstrosities. There are more selections on electronic reserves. I mean like 200-300 pages of reading each week. Then one 2 page paper each week. Two 6 page exegesis papers over the semester. One 15-20 page research paper for a final. A midterm exam paper of about 6 pages. The man’s just insane. And the reading is not light… it heavy scholarly analysis of biblical literature. I mean… all of us were just looking at him like he’s crazy. I mean.. he is. Worse… he does this same course over 6 weeks during the summer… doesn’t change the reading for it…. like 400-600 pages a week or something…. I think I’d die. I mean… for one class… it’s just crazy. I mean… I have other classes and a job and things. Man… just crazy.
But yeah… I think that’s all for now… I wanna get out of my office and get home. Tomorrow is a short work day and then I finally actually go shopping and get to like buy food and stuff… holy shit!
