Brief History: Harley grew up relatively normal and had rather normal ambitions, wanting to be a psychologist ever since she was young. Although, admittedly, her grades were never quite up to par, and she was really only into the idea for the money. However, poor grades never stopped anyone, since apparently university professors were relatively easy to bribe.
Once she graduated with honors, Harleen began to weasel her way through several different hospitals and asylums, until she landed herself at Arkham Asylum, where the most crazed and corrupt nut jobs this side of the equator were housed. Once there, she somehow managed to get herself sessions with the most famed of all the lunatics homed in Arkham; the 'Joker', clown prince of crime.
though her initial plan was to get Joker to open up to her and tell her all about his mysterious past so she could turn it into a best selling tell all book, the tables were soon turned on her. The Joker wound up telling her numerous extravagant sob stories about his life, making her pity, and eventually fall in love with the Clown Prince.
After a rather botched escape attempt by the Joker, Harley finally snapped and lost her mind completely, running out to buy a Harlequin clown costume (Since Joker said he liked her name; "Harlequin! Harley Quinn! You know, like the clown!") and 'avenge' her beloved and free him.
The two clowns ran amuck in Gotham, spreading their own brand of 'fun' wherever they went, until ultimately the Joker became bored with her, and pushed her out an eleven story window.
She survived, of course, but not by much.
While in Arkham under treatment for her mental illness, and healing up from her fall, she became 'friends' with one Pamela Isley, better known as Poison Ivy. Ivy was more then well known for her odd plant hi-breds and weird herbal concoctions. Feeling bad for Harley's utter devotion to the Joker, and the fact that the maniac was more likely to kill her then anything else, she provided Harley with a mixture that boosted not only Harley's strength, but speed, stamina, healing capabilities, and made her immune to toxins and poisons(to save her from the infamous joker gas).
Eventually down the line, while trying to find her own way as a 'super villain', she came across a bag that seemed to have no bottom. She'll never tell a soul how or where she acquired it, and it's exact origins are hard to trace, but within it she carries around an assortment of 'goodies' she uses in her crimes.
Eventually she decided that Gotham had enough villains, and she should find a new city. Some place she could spread some well deserved chaos, and lo and behold, she came across the city...
