It's "American Freestyle", based on Chinese kenpo. It seems centered on self-defense...but the teacher also mentioned something about teaching any bullies we ran into "the error of their ways

Haha...it says on the website that he gave his life to Christ, then began to incorporate his beliefs into his training regimen. So what you might be learning is HOLY KARATE! You'll be like Father Salade in La Pucelle!
From the looks of it, it seems very nontraditional, drawing from a lot of sources to amass together skills that have the widest usefulness today. The base seems to be kenpo (shorinji kenpo is the Japanese form of Chinese Shaolin-style martial arts), so the core skills are probably solid. The focus seems to be big on self-defense, which is something I wish my own classes would get into more. If someone tries to mug me on the street, I want to be able to drop them and break their joints. I suppose that's one of the troubles of being in a very traditionally-taught school.
Tell me how it goes - if nothing else, being involved in the martial arts makes me feel healthier, and I always end up thinking about writing fight scenes when I'm in the middle of practice. Hopefully, you'll continue to find it rewarding.
