Title: Watching Our Fantasies Decay
Author: Raitear
Rating: PG
Pairing: Bobby/John onesided
Summary: John gets upset while watching a TV Broadcast.
“What are you doing?” Bobby asked, coming into the rec room. The TV was on, a emotionless voice broadcasting the story behind the clips that were being shown. The Friends of Humanity had struck again, completely massacring a harmless group of mutants that had been garnering support for a recent mutant rights movement.
John didn't turn from the screen, didn't look at Bobby, “Watching our fantasies decay.” He said, his voice rough with emotion.
Bobby moved around the couch, saw the tears tracking down his friend's face. “John.” he said quietly.
John shook his head and curled himself into a smaller position on the couch with his knees brought up to his chest. His hand was clenched tightly around his lighter, the metal casing biting into his palm. He still didn't look over at Bobby as the ice mutant sat down beside him.
Bobby wanted nothing more than to draw his friend into an embrace, to shield him from the pain that the cruelties of the world caused him. He wanted nothing more than to wipe the tears away from his friend's eyes and hold him until it all went away.
He reached forward, softly placing his hand on John's shoulder.
John shuddered, drawing in a shaking breath. His eyes left the TV screen and shown with a soul deep sadness as he finally turned toward Bobby. His mouth opened then he closed it with a sigh, swallowing a sob as he leaned into Bobby's touch.
Bobby held him in silence, listening as John let out his tears and wishing that he knew what he could say to soothe him. It felt right to hold him, to do what he could to help even if it wasn't enough. It was all he could do, let John know that he was there for him if he needed it. Besides that, he didn't know what to do; with Kitty or Jubilee he'd find a way to make them laugh, with Rogue, well, she didn't cry unless it was about Logan and then she wanted to be left alone. But with John, nothing except time could heal his pain, Bobby could only offer comfort and sometimes convince himself that it helped.
After a moment John pulled away, uncurling from his position against Bobby. “Thanks.” he said, eyes puffy and red as he gazed at Bobby. There was need in his eyes, need that Bobby didn't know how to answer but wished he did.
Bobby brushed his thumb across John's cheek, feeling the wetness of his tears.
A change flashed in John's eyes, to fast for Bobby to recognize before the mutant turned away. He stood up, “It's late, we should get back upstairs before Cyke finds us still awake.”
Bobby stood as well and caught his wrist before he could walk away, “John,” He said, “You know that if you need anything...”
“I know.” John said, smiling through the remainder of his tears, “I know.” he moved towards Bobby and pressed a swift, hopeful kiss to the corner of Bobby's mouth. Disappointment flickered in his eyes at Bobby's confused look. He patted his friend's shoulder then turned away; fantasies decayed, no matter how long they are held onto, and he was finally learning to let his go.
