Great twist! Another chili lover right here :) There's a festival in my hometown where you can pay $10 for the chili-tasting bracelet, and then go from booth to booth having samples of chili from different restaurants and social clubs. My favorite was a Thai curry chili with a chopped mango garnish, though there's definitely a place for traditional and smokin' hot!
I'm pretty sure there's a chili fest or two around here somewhere (this is Texas, after all) but so far I haven't yet found out where it is. I should really get on that -- although I don't actually make chili like the guy in the story, I do love me some tasty chili. Maybe not quite to the extent she does, though. :)
I wonder if you react that way when you eat chili, though. Red hair and all that. :)
