I had to chuckle because I'm exactly the same way. It's a sort of snobbishness I probably picked up from my parents, who eschewed anything that was too popular. I was almost never a fan of the shows my friends in school watched. It was with a certain pride that I never watched "Dallas" until I was appearing in a parody of "Dallas" that a sixth grade friend of mine in the advance placement classes had somehow convinced our English teacher to mount. I look down upon "dime-store novels," and anything that's got too many fans makes me stay away.
But wouldn't you know it? Sometimes all those millions of people get it right!
Heh, I never watched "Dallas" at all, myself. I hear there's a revival of it going on now, or a remake, or something. Not really sure.
I just wish there was a more reliable guide for determining what the masses DID get right. :) The problem is that it always comes down to personal taste. Heh.
