LJ Idol, Week 31: "The Argument Clinic"

Jun 25, 2012 09:49

I won't go so far as to say that I deliberately set out, all the time, to do the opposite of what I am supposed to be doing -- that sort of thing would be childish and stupid -- but I can't deny that it's a lot of fun to do the unexpected, to act in ways contrary to those that others may consider normal, and especially to find "strange" or " ( Read more... )

In his defense, he DID warn me that he wanted me to check with him in future before trying anything unusual, which I didn't do on the second sketch, and he DID say specifically that he wanted us to work with partners, which I also ignored. I really can't fault the guy. :)

I had a great time in the class overall and still ended up with an A despite flunking that one assignment. I really did work my ass off on most of the stuff we did.

Thanks for coming by, as always!

cheers,
Phil

I'm glad you still ended with an A. It reminds me a bit of something I did in a test essay this semester. The professor asked something like, "Do you feel this play is a comedy, as the author said or do you feel it is a tragedy? Support your answer." I knew the professor went with the tragedy interpretation but I was so tired of toeing the party line and just writing what I knew would get me good grades.

So, in a mood, I answered that it was a comedy and the first, best evidence for it was that the author said it was and his words should carry a lot of weight as he was the author etc and then I provided some other evidence.

I knew he would not like my answer. After the test, my mood of ..rebellion or whatever faded and I wondered, "What have I done?"

I was so so so so so glad to see an A for that test. I really wanted to do well but I sometimes get tired of toeing the line.

So, in a way, I applaud your rebellion. I've been there. And I also hate group work (usually) but I do give in and do it as a group.

I enjoyed your

I like to think I got a bit less clueless over the years. Fortunately I was able to figure out when Leslie was interested in me, which is all that matters now. :)

I don't think this girl was all that disappointed, though. I don't know how much a catch I would have been in those days. Heh.

Thanks for coming by!

I guess I'm less clueless now? Maybe. I don't know. I still find out random things on a regular basis that make me go "huh?"

Did you know I was checking you out when I first met you at that party, years ago? ;)

Java is slowly introducing me to Monty Python or I'd be lost... Ironically enough, it was the Dead Parrot sketch and the Argument Clinic one that he showed me first. How funny :)

I did drama in high school and a bit in college. I wanted to be an actress someday...

I did experience playing multiple roles in one scene. The famous scene in Macbeth with the blood on her hands? I did the entire scene and played three characters for it at competitions in high school.

Pirhana Brothers sketch. Just saying.

lrig_rorrim's "paperwork" story from last week will pick up an added dimension of humor for you, after that. :)

The Dead Parrot and the Argument Clinic are two of my favorites (the Bookshop sketch, only heard on their albums, is probably my third favorite to play live. The Silly Job Interview and the Four Yorkshiremen round out my top five).

Playing multiple roles is fun! I always feel a bit odd doing the "shift from one side to the other" half-turn thing, but it seems to help people figure out when you're changing characters. Haven't done any live performances of that nature in years, though -- just my work with the Atlanta Radio Theatre Company, which occasionally had me playing multiple characters but never against each other.

Thanks for dropping in! May you continue to enjoy your introduction to Python. :) Java's a good man. :)

I love that you were able to pull it off with the teacher. Strangest thing I ever monologued for drama class was something by Shel Silverstein :-) I ran into similar trouble but more for choice of a nonsense story being retold into a speech instead of a 'real' monologue. I told her to either be more specific or get a sense of humor. Thankfully she and I had a reasonable rapport so I didn't get into trouble...

Lol! I hope it didn't affect your grade too badly -- although he did warn you, so I guess he can't be blamed too much.

No, fortunately I still wound up with an A for the course, since I really did work my ass off for most of it and do have enough talent to make my performances worthwhile. And like you said, I did deserve it. :)

Oh, and thanks for dropping by!

cheers,
Phil
