I heard a story on NPR once about nurses who work on oncology floors. Cancer is almost universally considered a terrible disease, a sad death. But when onc nurses were polled, they almost unanimously said that after working with cancer patients up close, they would choose cancer as a way to die. They said that it is a disease that gives both the patient and the patient's family a sense of closure and a certain amount of time to come to terms with the fact that they were about to die, and to say a final goodbye to their loved ones. When their time had come, these patients were ready for their death, and so were their families.
