I've been reading about how do a neurologic exam, and the book I've been reading has some pretty good practical advice as well as some wit. One of the tests you can do is to assess sensation: can the patient feel a stimulus? You prevent the patient from watching, so that way you know if it's really physical sensation they respond to. I saw heart surgery this morning. Talk about impressive stuff. More and more surgery these days is laproscopic and going through tiny incisions, and here I am watching one of the exceptions--cracking open a chest and going on a bypass machine. Crazy. I don't like the immunologists who've been teaching us, and Dr. K (who has been doing quite a lot) the least of all. Today, Dr. K was giving a 2-hour, back-to-back series on B-cells, antibody, and complement.
