Grr Linux is being smelly! Have been trying to install Mepis on my spangly new hard disk, but I cannot get my net connection working! I can configure my network card as much as I like but it still won't talk to anyone. *sulks ( Read more... )

I'm not sure you have ever told me that, but I'm starting to be convinced of it anyway. What Unix would you recommend then...?

Am generally pretty good at the moment. Things are going well with dooferlad and I've got another PhD interview in a couple of weeks, so hopefully someone will give me one in the right place. I may even end up in London... It would be good to see you again. Haven't done so for faaar too long.

It sounds like you've been having a rough time recently, though. I hope things improve soon for you guys :-/

Either excellent or insane - I haven't worked out which yet ;-) It is easier to get a place in a department you're already in, but there just aren't the jobs for James up here, so I'm going down sarf. People here have indicated that they think it's pretty certain I'll get offers from other places though, so hopefully I should be alright.

I'm applying for stuff in Condensed Matter. What I'm hoping to get into is looking at high temperature superconductivity. The project I want at Oxford is using neutron scattering to look at different crystal structures and find out why some lead to superconductors and some don't. There's other stuff I'm interested in as well, but we shall see.

I don't think we've got *any* Sun stuff at Uni. Certainly not for undergrad physicists. S'all windoze. Will investigate FreeBSD though...

Oooh, there's a freeBSD distributor just up the road from home... well I never. There's another one in Oxfordshire too. I had no idea it was such a hotbed of BSD goodness.
