I appear to have gone slightly insane due to eating about sixty grams of Lindt 70% Cocoa solids. This is a bit tragic really. I've only written about two sides of my twenty page lab report, which is also a bit tragic. I have a feeling that it may all be caffiene fuelled nonsense. I'm also hacked off with the stupid optical theorem and think I may ( Read more... )

I noticed the Caustics on yer website.

Can I ask what optical type gubbins you're working on?

*grins* Ahhh, yes. That was last term's project, and I haven't taken the pictures down yet. What we were trying to do was solve the differential equation governing the surface profile of a water vortex, and then compute the light shining through it. It was meant to be for a superfluid vortex, but we started with the water one, in the foolish belief it would be easier...

We took pictures of one a) so we would have stuff to compare to if we ever got any sensible results out of our program and b) so we had pretty pictures to put on the front of our reports :-D

Incidentally, noticed what you're doing work on at the moment and it sounded v cool. What's that for? A masters or similar?

*impressed look* I take it the keywords "trying" and "if we ever" means you didn't get the solution in the end; or is the project still a work in progress? The images do look v funkeh; optics++

I only ask coz I did a little raytracing work in the first term but never got to implement Photon Mapping for myself though :( Just wondering how much better your solution to said differential equation would be and whether or not you could apply it to a simple renderer and say obtain a faster solution to the problem of causticsI really wish I did a physics degree before getting onto this course! At least then I'd have some knowledge of Div, Grad, Curl and All That *sighs*. Heh, if we lived closer by you could've taught me ^_ ( ... )

We didn't get there in the end, although I gave them some ideas as to how I thought they could solve stuff for the superfluid case, as that was what they were really interested in...

The optics stuff we did was really unsophisticated and was purely geometrical optics, ending up with graphs like this. Sadly we were never going to get any really pretty pictures out unless we took photos, so that's what we did ;-)

Those pictures are very pretty though. Liz likes them :-) And I would have been pleased to coach you in vector calculus... I quite like it, in a perverse sort of way! Of course, if this was next year I might actually have been close enough to do something like that, but aaanyway. Do you have stuff planned for next year or not yet? Sounds cool that you're doing something novel at the moment with your project though *joins with you in the finger crossing-ness*

Took you long enough to discover HMHB :-)

Well, quite. I am truly clueless at times :-)
