Day 4: Your Favourite Doctor
Jon Pertwee wasn't the first Doctor I saw. In fact, thanks to the way Doctor Who aired on the PBS affiliate I got as a kid (KSPS out of Spokane, WA) he was the last of the classic Doctors I saw. The first time I saw anything with Pertwee was The Five Doctors, at a time when I was somewhat new to the show and wasn't at all familiar with anything prior to Tom Baker.
That left a lot of time and a lot of stories to get my preferences set but anything I thought I liked before I saw Pertwee got blown out of the water when I finally saw his stories. The dynamic with Liz was great, as it was with Jo; Sarah Jane was fantastic in her first season, alongside Pertwee. I'm not much of an action fan but he had that going. My Doctor has to be alien and Pertwee did that oh so well, between always referencing extraterrestrial races or places and his fascination with Venus among other things. The earthbound nature of the early stories never sat as poorly with me as it did with many, and although there's no shortage of it most anywhere in the show's history I felt the Pertwee era stoked my imagination like no other Doctor's. And the style! I'm no fashionista but the man oozed style.
Overall it was the stories that got me. Season 7 is just so damned strong and when you start a Doctor with stories like Pertwee had it's bound to make an impression. Then once those are seen, WHAM! Season 8 with the back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back Master stories just keeps the morphine drip going. It was nothing I considered as a kid but so much of the credit has to go to Barry Letts for doing what he did with Pertwee's time, his influence above all others (save Pertwee for his acting) made the era for me and made it my favourite.
