#17. Perfection
Despite telling himself to go home over and over again, the lanky boy made his way towards the basketball court. His long time crush had told him that he decided to confess to Jonghyun. Oh, how Jinki wished that he was the lucky boy that Kibum loved. He sighed loudly, kicking the dry leaves on his way.
Was Jinki's heart not broken enough that he had to hide behind the tree to watch the other confess? You’re so stupid Lee Jinki…
The familiar slender figure stood by the basketball net with another.
Jinki could see Kibum fidgeting with the hem of his white shirt, a habit of his when he was nervous. He bit his lip, feeling nervous himself. His body leaned against the tree carefully as he tried to listen to what the two were saying.
“I love you Jonghyun.”
The four most dreadful words to Jinki were finally spilled out of Kibum's thin lips. Unaware, his hand gripped tightly at his chest, anything, to stop the ache forming in his heart. Make it stop…
“What?” The blonde hair boy wiped away his sweat with the back of his hand.
Kibum lowered his head- just a bit. “I-I said, I think I love you.”
Then, silence fell between the two of them. The dribbling of the basketball echoed through the court.
Jinki’s gaze landed on his best friend and he immediately regretted stealing a glance. The hopelessness was so evident in the pair of glossy eyes. He wanted so much to run over there and pull Kibum into his embrace. But, he couldn’t. It was not his place to hold him, not yet. Now, all he could do was pray that Jonghyun would pour him with love instead. “Come on Jonghyun, say something…” He murmured desperately, hoping the wind would pick up his message.
“You are…” Jonghyun paused, “in love with me?”
Jinki could see the thick brow raised as the other spoke. Please, tell him you love him too…
“Yes.” Kibum responded almost inaudibly.
Laughter cut through the thick air.
“You have got to be kidding me.” The corner of Jonghyun’s thin lips was up; his eyes stared at the other’s quivering lips. “I mean, come on Kibum. You honestly think I would date someone like you?”
Jinki knew the harsh words stabbed the other in the heart through the sudden trembling frame. To him, the words made his blood boil. His hand tightened into a fist, his knuckles whitening. He threw down his backpack, ready to punch the smirk off Jonghyun’s face. Disgusting bastard!
“I only see you as a friend Kibum. Nothing more…” Jonghyun let out a sigh, running his hand through his blonde hair. “You’re just…” The boy stopped at the sound of a soft sob.
Kibum stood as firmly as he could though his arms shook at his sides. His hand came up to wipe away a stray tear. “I-I’m what? Not beautiful enough? Not enough personality for you?” He paused, catching his breath.
Jinki’s heart ached at the sight of his best friend. Kibum was rarely unconfident and so weak. Jinki wanted to run over and hold onto him. He wanted to rock their bodies together, telling him everything would be alright. He wanted to tell him he was beautiful the way he is and nothing would ever change the truth. There was only so much throbbing his heart can take and seeing Kibum doubting himself was killing him. You’re beautiful Kibum…
“Jonghyun, I’m sorry for not being perfect. Perfection doesn’t even exist.”
Jonghyun’s lips parted a bit and he looked like he wanted to say something. He looked away, distracting himself with the noisy basketball game. “It’s not that-” A sting in his left cheek interrupted him.
“Sorry but slapping you would make me feel so much better.” Kibum’s pink lips curled in a faint smile. He picked up his bag from the grass, slinging it over his shoulder. He didn’t bother saying anything else to the stunned boy as he made his way down the court and towards Jinki’s direction.
As if on cue, Jinki quickly scrambled to pick up his bag. He glued himself to the thick tree trunk, holding in his breath. His almond shaped eyes squeezed shut as he heard the rustling of his best friend’s steps. Keep walking Kibum, don’t look back.
“You are so stupid Jinki.”
Damn it…
“You honestly think I wouldn’t see you in a bright blue hoodie?”
Damn it… “O-oh, Kibum ah. I was uh…” Jinki scratched the back of his head sheepishly, avoiding the feline like eyes.
“Spying on me?” Kibum made his way to the other. He flicked the other on the forehead, earning a yelp of pain. “You deserved it.”
Jinki pouted, “I was only looking out for you…”
“Well, you saw everything. That saves me the trouble of telling you the details…” He blew up his bangs and straightened out his blazer. His eyes were slightly red and he was thankful his bangs covered his eyes.
“Hey Kibum, I’m sorry-”
“It’s fine. What is done is done. That jerk must be blind. Honestly, how is it even possible for me to not be beautiful enough?”
Jinki smiled, “Exactly.”
Deep inside, he knew Kibum was only putting an act in front of him. The boy didn’t want others to think he was fragile and weak; he wanted to be tough and strong. Jinki knew he was hurt and that his heart was still in pieces. It would take time for him to heal. And no matter how long that would take, Jinki will be there for him.
“I think you are beautiful the way you are.”
Kibum bit his lip; his cheeks flushed. “W-what?”
“I just wanted to tell you…” Jinki grinned cheekily, locking his gaze with his long time crush. “Although perfection doesn’t exist, you are perfect in my eyes.”
