#50. Cold

Aug 16, 2010 01:04

Kibum shivered. He hated the cold more than anything in the world. A chip nail, mismatched clothes or mascara tears were nothing in comparison.

The cold made him remember the past- things he tried to keep off his mind.

It was on a wintry day when his parents died from a car accident. He remembered the raw sting of his tears on his cheeks as he scrambled his way to the hospital. His slender fingers were numb in his mittens; his toes were numb in his boots. That day, Kibum was cold but his heart was even colder.

It was on a chilly day when his three-year relationship ended. He had caught his lover making out with another boy in an alley. Kibum remembered cussing harshly at the boy, his breath visible in the air. His cold hand eventually made contact with his boyfriend's cheek. Hot tears brimmed along his lashes but he was not going to cry for a cheater. That day, Kibum was cold but his heart was even colder.

The cold made him realize just how lonely he truly was.

It was past midnight and the boy knew he could never fall asleep in this temperature. He found himself slowly making his way out of his room and into the ski resort's lobby. Taking a seat in front of the fireplace, he sighed.

He had no one to blame but himself. A week ago, Kibum was asked to help raise money for the dance team in his university. Being a dance lover, he automatically agreed not knowing the details. It was three dances with his team a night for a week. If only he knew he would have to come to a ski resort, he would have declined without a doubt.

The crackling of the wood echoed through the lobby. Kibum pulled his comforter closer to his body. He watched the blazing orange dance as his icy hands hovered above for heat.

"Kibum, is that you?" A soft voice murmured in the dark.

Looking up, he met the gaze of Jinki. The other was in his dance team and he was the clumsiest person he had ever met. "Why are you up so late?"

Jinki chuckled lowly as he combed out his messy honey brown locks. "I could ask you the same." He took a seat on the sofa in front of him. Feeling a light breeze, he pulled on the collar of his hoodie and dug his hands deep in the front pocket.

Kibum stared at the other. It was funny how the other looked so beautiful by the fireplace. The pair of soft brown orbs glistened in the dark, cheeks glowed a tint of rose and the thick lips were moist and luring. He lightly shook his head to get rid of the thoughts.

"Couldn't sleep?"

He nodded as he spoke, "I can't sleep when I'm cold." Kibum watched Jinki bunch up his knees under his chin and took a note of his small trembles. "It's getting late, you should go back to bed hyung." He suggested, he could tell the other was cold in his hoodie.

Jinki shook his head, smiling. "I want to keep you company."

His throat suddenly felt dry and he gulped down hard. "Why?" He murmured inaudibly as he played with the loose string on his blanket.

"You look lonely." Jinki answered simply.

It happened again the next night. Kibum was tossing and turning in his bed, trying hard to fall asleep. He was shivering despite his fleece hoodie and blanket. He sat up and looked at the clock. It read 1:04AM. Brushing his hair out of his eyes, he held his blanket under an arm and made his way to the lobby.

The boy was shocked to see another figure seated on the sofa. Slowly, he tiptoed his way down the stairs. "Jinki hyung, is that you?" He murmured softly in the dark.

Jinki turned around, meeting the other's gaze. His lips curled into a gentle smile as he ushered the other to take a seat with him.

The younger one frowned. He fixed the blanket around him tightly before asking, "Why are you up so late?"

"I could ask you the same." He said, just like the night before. He returned his attention back to the dancing flames. His long fingers traced the pattern of the flames, enjoying the warmth he felt.

Kibum noticed two cups on the coffee table. He realized that the other was waiting for him to come- almost expecting it.

"It's a cup of warm milk." Jinki told him as if he read his mind. "I know you can't sleep when you're cold." He pushed the steaming cup closer to the other and continued, "So I made you this. Drink some Kibum."

"Why?" The word rolled out of his tongue immediately.

"You look cold." Jinki answered simply.

Wrapping his cold fingers around the mug, he blew on the hot liquid before taking a small sip. Kibum gripped tighter on the mug and was amazed at the tingling feeling down his throat. He closed his eyes.

Jinki restrained a smile. "Feel better now?"

The other hummed. "Thank you Jinki," He said without opening his eyes.

----------------------------------------------------

Finally, the week was almost over and Kibum would only need to spend one last night at the ski resort. He was ecstatic to escape the barren land, the howling wind and the white snowflakes that danced in the night sky.

Like every night for the past week, he made his way down to the lobby with his comforter. It was like his routine to take a seat by the fireplace and bury himself in the blanket. Tapping his feet on the fuzzy carpet below, Kibum waited for his usual company, Jinki.

It was as if on cue, faint footsteps padded it's way down the hall. Jinki entered the lobby and casually ghosted his creamy fingers close to the fireplace. He grinned at the other, smoothing out his hair.

The younger boy's eyes missed nothing, where were the cups of warm milk? He frowned, "No warm milk tonight?"

He was still smiling as he shook his head.

"But you know I can't sleep if I'm cold..."

Jinki hummed at the fact. "Well, there are other ways to warm you up Kibum."

"Like?" His brow raised, curious as to what the other had in mind. He watched the other take his seat beside him instead of his accustomed seat. "What are you doing..." Kibum's voice trailed off as Jinki crawled underneath the warmth of his blanket. The two sat side by side; their shoulders brushed against each other.

"Warming you up," Jinki murmured softly, taking the other into his arms.

Kibum clutched at the corner of his blanket as he chewed on his bottom lip. He felt his warm arm around his waist and the sudden contact made his cheeks flush uncontrollably. "J-jinki," he stuttered faintly.

The older boy rested his cheek above his head. He took the cold hands in his and interlaced their fingers, without thinking about it. "Are you feeling better now?"

Kibum could feel the other's breath on him and it left tingles on his cheek. Unconsciously, he shifted closer and hid his face against the crook of his skin. He smiled and nodded. "I'm feeling much better now. How about you?"

Jinki was tracing the pattern of the blazing fire on the back of his hand. He pressed a chaste kiss on Kibum's forehead. He looked into the other's glistening orbs before whispering in his ear, "I've never felt better."

There were no more shivers or even the slightest tremble running down his body. It was still silent in the lobby just like every night but the crackling of the fire and the thumping of his unsteady heart made it almost deafening to Kibum.

He smiled on the hot skin of his neck even though the other could not see. The boy bent over to softly brush his thin lips against his; it was a light kiss. "Thank you Jinki for staying up with me and keeping me warm on this cold winter night."

Maybe, just maybe, the cold could bring something nice to him.

And on this cold night, Kibum was warm in Jinki's arms.
