You don’t own me

Feb 18, 2023 23:28

I don’t tell you what to say
I don’t tell you what to do
So just let me be myself
That’s all I ask of you.

Arguably the first feminist pop song, released in 1963 and sung by Lesley Gore.

TBG didn't think this was a real song when he heard it on Miss Fisher's Modern Mystery., so I played it for him. :DD It's one of my favorite.

I remember they also used it in a jokey way in The First Wives Club. But you can’t beat 17-year-old Lesley Gore singing her heart out.

She seems so sure of herself. It was a different time. I mean, now women have so much freedom, but back then we had to fight for every scrap.

Sadly, we’re still fighting for equal pay. And for the right to choose. 😔

Interestingly, this song was written by two men.

That is interesting. Good for them. Mind you, they also wrote Sadie (the cleaning lady), a truly awful song, which shatters any respect I have for them.
