On girly stuff...

Something has been bothering me for the past few days - I have no idea why but occasionally my mind grasps one of the million thoughts that runs through my head per second and holds onto it until I satisfy my curiosity. So this question, I ask you - does advertising really influence your choice of tampon ( Read more... )

cause we’re pretty much guaranteed that if I’m shopping for tampons I’m wanting chocolate.

I don't know if this makes me a typical guy or not, but I laughed so hard at that it HAS to be politically incorrect.

Let me recite to you some wisdom from a stand up comedian who relates to the advertising during the american superbowl, which I think sums up my point on advertising.

"The ads are like mystery stories. You don't even know what they're selling, until the very end. 'Three rabbits are sitting on a log, one goes home and hangs himself.....buy a bike'"

Advertising is become such a joke. Tampons are no exception unfortunately :(

I think the whole tampon advertising thing is a little more subliminal than say Coke is. I dont think I know of anyone who decided to buy Carefree tampons so they would look cool and pick up thatcute boy at school. However, when you look at the wall of different types of tampons available you may look at one particular brand and the image of girls having fun on the beach may pop into your head, giving you the impression that girls who like to go out and have fun wear this brand of tampon. Of course it wont be a major influence, but often all you need is some kind of tinge to give you a slight preference ( ... )

I just like the fine line that tampons used to tread between 'subtle' and 'flagrant' - somewhere along the line, subtlety dropped off though, it seems.

Me, I use homebrand because I'm cheap and one's about as good as another (oh bite me, I don't know any better). The idea of those coloured tampons squicks me WAY too much. White != sterile, but colours... that just conjures imagery of crepe paper in water. Ew.

Reusable, on the other hand, not ew. I keep planning it but have never gone there. I'd do the DIY (or get someone else to DIT(hemselves) for me) route though. None of this commercial eco-conscience for me, ta.

I try new brands of tampons all the time. Part of it is because of the advertising, and part of it is because I like to try new things. And when I was about 14, I DID buy the ones with the hologram packaging, because they looked cool.

I do buy those Carefree ones with the two sizes though. I find them really useful. I use the super ones for about 3 days, and the regular ones for about 3 days, and then I just use a super panty liner. I'm a real sanitary protection guru, I've tried them all :P
