Ramblings on Collegium that make sense to me

Frankly the number of people who attend this Collegium was shockingly low.  The fighters are not the only ones who do not show up.  We are not getting the new Arts people.  We are not getting the new Service people.  We are not getting the experienced Arts and Service people.  We are getting a very small insular group of mostly Peers who have hung ( Read more... )

As someone from the northern end of Caid, I've wanted to go several times, but with it being in October, and that month being very busy with events already, including the expense for GWW, going to your Collegium is a bit too much financially (travel, meals, hotel room), as well as the time. I had a hard time finding out what classes were being offered outside of IKINS. For IKINS, only one class was of interest, and I didn't want to pay so much just for one known class.

As to suggestions to improve, getting out the word to folks of scheduled classes, teasers, even sent to other kingdoms and a variety of mailing lists might help. Also having the location in a less costly location would help those on limited budgets. And maybe putting the event during a month that isn't already so busy might help, like during the slower winter months. But then I don't know how slow or busy those months really are for those in your kingdom.

1. after being on an already tight budget and being at an event over the last few weekends... it was impossible to swallow a hotel stay or even a long drive and prices of classes

2. i feel like i have a plethora of "teachers" all around me with more interesting stuff to teach than i have time to learn! i love the casual "circles" at events where everyone has a project.

so in short... if there's something i want to learn i usually just ask someone... and it was way out of budget (time and money) in an already really busy month.

oh... and the appeal of having fighting at the events... i like doing things in the sca as a couple, and if i'm reticent, or on the wall about going to an event, the best way to coerce me into going is alfar already getting his gear ready to pack. call me co-dependent, call me whatever, but giving the fighters something to do while their non-fighter counterparts go to cool classes is really not a bad idea.

I will go out of my way to attend any event that has Radnor teaching another history class. I got to take one of his classes years ago and it was fantastic.

Here's a question for you: If the best teachers aren't responding to "cattle calls" and the current officers "don't go back far enough" how will they know who to ask? I understand ignoring open calls but it may be one factor contributing to the current issue. How do we get around it?

Past chancellors knew that they had to use their personal relationships to call in favors to get good teachers, and did not just depend on who asked to be a teacher. Sometimes the teacher being courted (victim) asked for a subject to be assigned to them so they had an excuse to read something new ( ... )
