This made me squee with delight! I have massive amounts of love for this trilogy - can't wait to see who you've cast!
I know we've only just become 'friends' and at the risk of putting that in jeopardy already, I really, REALLY take exception to this...
that was essentially rape Um, no it wasn't. For lots of reasons, but, most noteably, because (you say it yourself) he didn't force himself on her sexually.
The rape/not rape argument has been done to death in this fandom so I won't take it any further than that.
I'll step away from that argument (because it's not something I really wanted to debate and/or argue about, it was just something in my head that I needed to get out) and say this: I just have serious issues with the fact that Elena's ability to make a choice of her own about that situation was taken away from her, and most of those issues come from the fact that the thirteen-year-olds on tumblr were sighing and squealing about how romantic it was. I just can't stand excusals and ignorals of Damon's behavior-- or anyone's, in any fandom, actually.
Absolutely. And I agree with all of that (to an extent, because, to me, it was mostly about entertainment and shock value because this is television and not real life and I have zero to do with tumblr). What I DO NOT agree with is saying that it's essentially rape. Becuase it's not. It's not even close. And to say that it is trivialises a very important issue. I mean, if you're determined to put a 'human crime' label on it, then it was assault at worst. Not even sexual assault. To liken what he did to rape. To say that it basically was rape?! In my opinion, that's taking your argument too far and stirring up strife for the sake of it. (On the other hand. To say that it was romantic? The mind boggles...)
I think we'll just have to agree to disagree on this point and completely agree to AGREE on the whole Alex/Amelia thing instead!
I am SUPER into the idea of Wade and Zoe now. I wasn't during the pilot, but during the last three episodes where they've gradually turned him into a real boy? Yes.
The fact that he spent half of last night shirtless has nothing to do with this opinion, I swear.
ME TOO. I love that they're turning him into a 'real boy'. He's one of those characters you could absolutely go either way with-- making him complex/a real person or keeping him surface level, and it would be super easy to keep him a surface level stereotype, so I'm glad to see they seem to be going the other direction.
I really take issue with the whole compulsion storyline, and it went far beyond Damon using Caroline for sex. She slept with him before she was compelled, but that's neither here nor there. I really think the greater issue though, was the mind control in general, having her to various tasks on his behalf and drinking from her.
I'm mostly over the whole compulsion thing in regards to Caroline-- it's done with, it's in the past, whatever. It was just brought back when I saw some people on tumblr saying that their fight in the Lockwood mansion was "romantic" and "rife with sexual tension" or some shit. Sexualizing that means sexualizing Caroline's efforts in trying to stand up for herself and the people that she cares about, and that pisses me off.
I'm really uncomfortable with calling what Damon did to Elena rape. I'm the kind of person who is offended by literally nothing, but...uncomfortable is a good word. There was no sex involved. It was not rape. It was wrong, it was a dick move on his part, but it wasn't rape. It wasn't about control or humiliation. As fucked up as his methods were, he was trying to save her. Her other option was death, and he freaked out. That is in no way comparable to what happens during rape. I'm saying this as someone who loathes Damon.
The thing that I've hated about this show is the way people forgave Tyler. It seems like they forgot how he literally tried to rape Vicki.
To me, it's more that she made that choice for herself and he took it away after she'd already said no. And...that isn't a word that I throw around lightly. It just isn't. I know that for him it wasn't about humiliation, but that wasn't what she wanted and he ignored that. It wasn't his life and so it wasn't his decision to make.
And.....the Tyler thing.....there was a run of several episodes at the beginning of S1 that I didn't actually see, so I didn't actually know that happened.
But then that goes right back to my issue with this fandom being willing to ignore what the men do and not what the women do.
Again, it was a dick move on his part. But it still wasn't rape, which by definition includes sex. As someone who has suffered through that ordeal in real life, I can assure you I'd much rather have someone stuff blood down my throat when I'm about to die in a crazy, selfish attempt to save my life

I just disagree with so many things that this show chooses to be and do that I'm not even sure why I'm watching anymore.
