Thoughts on the BBC meme that's been going around

I haven't been reading LJ for a while. So I have missed some of the stuff that's been going on.

Anyway, I am not going to bother posting my version of the books meme because some of the books obviously all of us have read, I do not read Terry Prachett so that's a no to all of them, and I am sad that absolutely no one has read Midnights Children by ( Read more... )

The Satanic Verses put me off Rushdie. I found it so thickly written as to be nearly incomprehensible.

Satanic Verses is not a good example of his writings...all his books are so excellently written...and then you have the problem child, the Satanic Verses.

I've read Midnight's Children, and quite liked it, though I prefer Rohinton Mistry. For what it's worth, I thought the Satanic Verses was kind of dull, though. And I've been generally put off Rushdie by the horde of inferior imitators - Zadie Smith and the like - who've followed in his wake.

I think his best was Moors Last Sigh. I think he was smoking something when he wrote Satanic Verses, because it's so awfully written, and compared to everything else he has written, it was purely an aberration.

Yeah. I got the impression he stuck in the Muhammad-parody thing as a desperate attempt to get some attention for what would otherwise have been a horrible flop. 'Enh... one of 'em's turning into a demon, one into an angel... they wander around aimlessly... clash of cultures yah yah yah... oh sod it. Look at me, I'm the Prophet! I made it all up!'
