Continued...

And this, this is a WONDERFUL description of his physical and emotional states:

Regulus hoisted his wand then stopped.

His legs buckled and he felt a little sick.

“Fuck.” Regulus stamped his boot hard on the pavement.

He squeezed shut his eyes and pressed the heels of his hands into them. Sirius taught him to do that to see the stars.

Brilliant. Love the adult impatience with himself (the boot stamping) and the childhood ritual of looking at stars inside his head.

And when he finally speaks, we learn he's got a sharp mind and sharper wit: "If more were actually in his mind, and at least as much were in his heart, he'd be twice the Death Eater, and half-interesting to listen to when he was half-baked." Fabulous. It's almost Shakespearean.

And Walburga. She was magnificent. Indeed she was. SO nice to see a true relative of Sirius and Regulus, a beautiful/handsome woman full of power and venom. I was afraid of her and it was delightful. :) I always felt like she was talking about something other than ( ... )

Oh wow! Thanks for giving this a read! I'll be back to respond to your lovely comments but thanks for the heads up on the typo. That's just blatantly wrong lol! Our brains can play amazing tricks on us as we write/read, and I appreciate that yours saw that mistake.

I'm so sorry for my delayed response. Last week I began working in a new department at my university, and they are strict about the web at work! LJ fell behind because of work. *gasp*

First, THANK YOU for this thoughtful review; it made my day when I received it. I've chewed on your words over the last week, and you hit on many key themes of this story, which reassures me my writerly intentions translated, lol!

Second, on to the story...

I do think of Regulus as less flamboyant, more self-composed than his brother, and yet, dynamic and multi-dimensional nonetheless. Your idea of him being plain or boring is apt because Sirius certainly may view his idiot brother as too compliant and reserved. I'm attempting to characterize Reg as the logistical, cautious thinker that other members of his family perhaps are not. Regulus fascinates me because we only know him indirectly but his actions left an indelible mark on Harry's final quest; an argument could be made his actions benefited Harry more than Sirius' ever did. Regardless of that ( ... )

So very sorry for how late this review is in coming to you. I have read this story several times over and find something new that I missed each time.

I think you are endlessly clever in the way that you introduce and define Sirius through Regulus and Walburga and what it is you are saying about Blacks in general by defining them in terms of other Blacks. You are an absolute genius and I am not just kissing your ass.

And as much as I would love to jump right into your characterization of Sirius and how well fleshed out I think he is, even with him not in the room, so to speak, I have to start with Regulus because there is no definition of Sirius without understanding Regulus.

Your Regulus is just stunning to me in just how human he comes across. Sirius, Walburga and Bellatrix are all a bit larger than life in canon and fanon, but just like in canon there is something more...real about Reg. It was Jo's last big surprise for me because prior to book seven he was almost insubstantial ( ... )

The rest of it...

In absentia Sirius is introduced to us through his brother's eyes. Because Regulus is real, Sirius is then made real, although not less fantastic because goodness, Reg adores Sirius.

Huh...I'm suddenly realizing why there is so much Blackcest fic out there.
*makes a face*

Once Sirius had a go of his own at his ancestors' notorious birds. Home on holiday from Hogwarts, he managed to procure a white-breasted goose, missing an eye. He announced with drunken bravado while playing The Benny Hill Theme on a tape deck that this bird would carry the family crest after he came into his inheritance.

This is perfection, oh how utterly different Sirius is from his brother, antonym and synonym. It is such over the top behavior and is something Regulus would rather die than attempt despite his envy over Sirius' free spirit and rebellion. You imply that Sirius is Regulus' negative and therefore likely to be, or at least seem egotistical, assuming, extroverted, confident and free wheeling.

Sirius is ever present every step of the way ( ... )
