So I just got back from 3 days in NYC attending BEA, or Book Expo America. It's the largest conference/trade show in the book industry and everyone goes to it. Thursday was full of seminars at the hotel (in Brooklyn, right next to the Brooklyn Bridge), and Friday and part of Saturday I spent at the trade show in Manhattan. So much free food, free ( Read more... )

It was awesome!

A Joan Didion quote on my forearm and a line of music across my back. Books & music = my life. :)

Oh nice! What song??

Ive been thinking about attempting a tat. Im not a fan of needles, so it scares me a lot. Id probably get something dorky like an eight note or something. lol.

"Two of Us" by the Beatles. The line that goes, "you and I have memories..."

Heh, I'm not THAT good at reading music, but the tattoo guy kept asking what everything meant and I kept saying stuff like, "That
's a quarter note. And that's a half note. That means you hold the note into the next bar. That means the note is natural even though the key says it should be sharp." :-P

Hehe, my first tattoo was exactly that - eighth notes on my shoulder. :)

I went to BEA last year when it was here in DC, but this year we only sent a few staff members because hotels are soooooo expensive there. I was really disappointed that I didn't get to go.

I don't know if you know I work for First Book - it's a nonprofit that gives new books to low-income kids. Most of our books come from publisher donations, so we do a lot of schmoozing at BEA to get more donations. We're also a charitable partner of BEA, so you might have seen some of our promotional materials there - this year's campaign was "What Book Got You Hooked?"

No, I didn't know that you worked for them, that's really cool. Yeah, I saw your promotional little drop-boxes everywhere...I thought about putting the book that got me hooked...Extremely Loud...by JSF ("What about a tea-kettle?") but that's not exactly a kids book so I didn't. Really cool campaign, though!

Yeah I dunno. He was with a guy who was promoted as "The REAL Rain Man!" I guess that's the guy the movie was based on. "The Real Rain Man" was funny, he kept walking around going, "Where's the booth. The BOOTH. The BOOTH."
