mangaaaaaaaa.

SO TODAY.

I kinda failed my Korean quiz, but that's okay (not actually lol OTL).

But that aside, I went to Borders (bookstore), which is shutting down, and now I have a small manga collection.

My friend financed more than half of all the Rurouni Kenshin (loooool early birthday present, which is what I did for her a couple of years ago I think, when she wanted to buy a book xD) :DDD Initially I went in just thinking to buy the volumes with lots of Aoshi-sama in it... which was like about 3 or 4... and somehow I ended up getting 19 volumes asdf;ljk OTL. They didn't have all of it though. But pretty good value right? Around about $40, for something which would have originally cost $400 because manga is fricking expensive here (ranges from $15-25).

So very happy! But kinda frustrated, because I went to a different branch on Tuesday while I was on the way to the post office to get a stamp (which I didn't end up buying, because I got distracted by the bookstore lmaooo), and I was like zomgggg 80%, and bought volumes 1-4 & 6 of Saiyuki, a volume of Rurouni Kenshin and the last volume there of Fullmetal Alchemist, and then I went back today and found out that they were also having 90% off :( ...and so I got volumes 3-5 of Saiyuki Reload from there today too xD

If you can't tell, IT'S REALLY ALL RATHER EXCITING FOR ME ≧(´▽`)≦

That aside, this semester is almost over!

What should I take next semester? :( Dropping Korean (because I am a quitter like that. Actually, I  can't take it during my later years anyway since I don't have enough units available, and I also feel like I am learning nothing. Well, I actually am learning nothing xD)

So for next semester, I'm currently enrolled in this course for Asian Studies:

ASNS 1602 - MODERNITY IN ASIA

DESCRIPTION: Asia has undergone dramatic and rapid modernisation since the eighteenth century. Religious change, state-formation, political and social movements, gender and family, consumer culture, rural development, urban culture, and modern class structure are some of the cultural, social, economic and political aspects of Asia's social transformation. Through the study of selected Asian societies, this unit will examine some of these aspects in the contexts of colonialism, nationalism, postcolonial economic development, and globalisation.

ASSESSMENTS: 1x1500wd essay (40%), 1x2hr exam (40%), 1x1000wd tutorial presentation and abstract (20%)

BUTTTTT. I was thinking that this one looks pretty interesting?

ASNS2632 - MODERN  JAPANESE  SOCIAL  HISTORY

DESCRIPTION: This unit of study will begin with examination of social aspects of the Meiji reforms, evaluating interpretations of their aims and effects. The focus will then turn to the emergence of new social forces in the twentieth century, including industrial workers, an urban middle class and a women's movement. We will also explore changes in daily life and attitudes to work and leisure as urbanisation and industrialisation progressed and assess the effects of the Second World War and the Occupation.

ASSESSMENTS: 1x class presentation (20%), 1x1500wd essay (30%), 1x1.5-hr mid semester exam (30%), 1x test (10%), continuous assessment, including class participation and writing tasks (10%)

The assessments look kinda gross though, and the ASNS2632 lecture is from 8-10am, while ASNS1601 has lectures from 12-1pm and 11-12pm on two separate days. In addition to this, I won't need to buy new textbooks if I take ASNS1602 because the textbook I have right now is used for it, but I can always sell it for a good price since it's in pretty good condition (probably because I hardly ever use it HAHAHA OTL)

But then again, ASNS2632 sounds a lot more interesting, and less broad than ASNS1601. I think this subject can also go towards getting a Japanese Major, not entirely sure though. The lecturer isn't that bad either, and I have no idea who's taking the other subject. I'd be with all of the second year students though, which means I'd have to make new friends, which isn't that bad, but still, it would be nice... maybe I can convince some other people to take this subject with me :D

But asdf;lkj I don't know ;A; And then because I'm dropping Korean, I'm probably going to take up another Japanese subject, but I'm conflicted for that too xD Here are the options!

JPNS2670 - MODERN JAPANESE LITERARY MASTERPIECES

DESCRIPTION: This unit of study aims at improving students' language skills by reading modern Japanese literature, which is expressed at a different level from daily use. The comprehension of Japanese literary texts enables students to gain an insight into the writers' themes and expressions and is relevant to contemporary life. When necessary, English translations will be used in conjunction with authentic Japanese material. Students are expected to develop a critical appreciation of Japanese literature.

ASSESSMENTS: 1x2hr final exam (33%), 1x1hr mid-semester exam (17%), 1x1000wd presentation (17%), 1x1500wd essay (25%), continuous assessment (equivalent to 500wds) (8%)

JPNS2672 - JAPANESE MEDIA CULTURE AND NEW JAPAN

DESCRIPTION: This unit aims to explore the new Japan and its youth cultures and to guide students to understand and broaden their knowledge of changing aspects of Japanese culture and society. Topics from Japanese traditions through to contemporary culture will be analysed. Learning activities include reading media texts (e.g. newspaper articles), video analysis, discussion, research and video conferences. The unit also provides students with opportunities to pursue their interests and develop cultural knowledge and communication skills.

ASSESSMENTS: continuous assessment, including 2xclass quizzes (equivalent to 1000wds each) (34%), discussions and research based project (equivalent to 2500wds) (41%), 1x1.5hr exam (25%)

In terms of content, I'm probably learning more towards the latter (although the first option doesn't sound bad), however I'm kinda put off by the assessments... The lecture times for both aren't that bad either - no 8am starts xD One of them does have a 9am start though ._.

SO CONFUSED ARGHHHH.

What does everyone else think?
