On guns

So many people look at school shootings and say that it's cause to do away with the second amendment.  Frankly, I don't agree.  Maybe it's the fact that I grew up in a farming/ranching town, and that we did share in the meats that were brought home by hunters in our community (when you're as poor as we were, you don't turn down half an elk just ( Read more... )

We have really strict gun laws here in Australia. I remember when I was about... 6 or 7, Dad had to go turn a lot of his guns in because the government decided that rifles of a certin calber and size had just become "illegal" and they paid you for your guns (which were then melted down and turned into scrap) Since then, they've made it harder and harder for anyone to get guns. I've been trying to get a handgun licence for two years, and I have about... 150 pages of stuff to read and sign, and I have to be registered with the police, I need to have attended 3 shoots within 6 months at the local gun club (that's my main obstacle in getting the licence - I work the days they shoot) I need to have attended a one day safety course and any and all guns owned must be registered with the police. You need to be a current member of a gun club (or if you have reason other than sport shooting, must have written permission from property owners to have a gun for things like hunting or putting livestock animals down) Ammo and gun must be stored ( ... )

The United States is so saturated in guns it's damn near impossible to even attempt to round them up.

Which is, in fact, part of the problem with making them illegal. Make the laws more stringent, and most people will be willing to comply with the laws, because while it's a pain in the ass, it's better to still be allowed their toys. Make the guns illegal, and I know of at least a couple of people who will simply decide that it's not worth it to follow the laws because they'd rather have their guns...no matter what the cost.
