Can I just say that the word "niggardly" bugs me?  I'm an English major who's excessively fond of her thesaurus, but I'd prefer that "niggardly" disappears from our language, based on the connotations for even those people who don't know the meaning of the word.  To me, using that word is much like calling something "gay" or "retarded

Well, if it helps, i've never encountered that word before. I guess we don't have it in England.
